Also, of the Discipline, the Postures, and whatsoever else is necessarie for the attayning to the Art, first edition, woodcut frontispiece, initials and head-pieces, closely trimmed, occasionally affecting headlines and catchwords, occasional soiling, lacking front free endpaper, ink ownership inscription to head of A1 recto, contemporary mottled calf, gilt, sympathetically rebacked, retaining original backstrip, [Schwerdt II, p.10; STC 17333], small 8vo, by B[ernard] A[lsop] and T[homas] F[awcett] for Ben: Fisher, and are to be sold at his shop, at the signe of the Talbot without Aldersgate, 1634.⁂ Rare, we can trace only 2 copies at auction in the last 70 years, including this one in 1979. "First edition of a book on archery, which, although it does not actually include the chase, describes fully how the bow and arrow was used in early times for all purposes." - Schwerdt. A FINE AND RARE DECORATED TIBETAN SADDLE, 17TH/18TH CENTURY formed of a wooden tree joined by later leather thongs, fitted with iron cantle, bow and end board plates all decorated with openwork designs of scrolling foliage and billowing clouds inhabited by dragons, the cantle and bow each with central flaming jewels guarded by a pair of dragons, all encrusted with silver and highlighted with gilding (small losses), and with pairs of iron rings front and rear for attachment 10 3/4 in; 27.5 cm high A similar saddle decorated with a related scheme in the same technique is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. No. 1999.318). See Larocca 2006, 224-226.
˜A 16 BORE FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY CLAUDE BERTON-BOURLIER, FOR PRESENTATION TO AN EASTERN POTENTATE, CIRCA 1830 with exceptionally long tapering barrel decorated with a gilt band around the muzzle and formed with a full-length slender groove for sighting, fitted with gold fore-sight on a gilt arrow, four gold lines at the breech, St Etienne proof mark on the left and stamped 'Merlez Duon' beneath, platinum vent, engraved grooved tang, engraved flush-fitting lock signed on a gold-lined oval (rubbed), fitted with 'French' cock, rain proof pan and roller, figured walnut half-stock profusely inlaid with silver wire scrolls, flowers and baskets of fruit, carved with a panel of basket weave at the fore-end and the grip, the latter continuing back to a finely chequered panel and a scroll in the round on the underside of the butt, raised cheek-piece, full silver mounts cast and chased in low relief, comprising solid side-plate decorated with trophies-of-arms, garlands and scrolls, trigger-guard with palmette terminal and a trophy-of-arms on the bow, struck with marks on the rear, butt-plate stamped en suite and with further designs of foliage, rear ramrod-pipe matching the butt-plate tang and five further ramrod-pipes each decorated with foliage and flowers, and original ivory-tipped ramrod with iron worm 171.5 cm; 67 1/2 in barrel Claude Berton-Bourlier specialised in making high quality weapons for export to the east and is recorded in St Etienne circa 1753-1831.
‡ A 15 BORE SPANISH PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN BY VICTOR ESTEBAN, DATED 1838 with octagonal sighted barrel punched and blued over its entire surface, retained by a pair of slender iron bands each incorporating a ramrod-pipe beneath, fitted with silver 'spider' fore-sight on a bed of gold scrolls, further gold scrolls over the breech and about the gold-lined punzónes of Bustindui at the breech (Neue Støckel 124 and 130, the latter unclear), finely engraved tang decorated with scrolling foliage on a matted ground, dated at the rear and with the maker's gold-lined punzón behind the breech, finely chiselled lock decorated with a pair of hounds in pursuit of a stag, marked en suite with the breech and with a waterfowl on the tail, chiselled hammer, figured full stock carved over the fore-end and with a low bud-shaped moulding about the tang, iron mounts comprising trigger-guard with foliate terminal and the bow struck with gold-lined punzón of Miguel de Zegarra, engraved flush-fitting foliate side-plate, engraved butt-plate, a pair of sling swivels, and horn-tipped ramrod 89.0 cm; 35 in barrel Provenance Dr James D. AN IRISH FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS BY HUTCHINSON, DUBLIN, LATE 18TH CENTURY with multi-stage brass barrel formed with a belled moulded muzzle, inscribed 'Dublin' and with Dublin city census marks 'DC-4673' over the breech, engraved iron tang, bevelled lock signed within a scrollwork frame and with a spray of foliage on the tail (cock replaced), full stock, engraved brass mounts comprising solid side-plate decorated with a trophy-of-arms trigger-guard signed 'Fras Hutchinson' on the tang and decorated with a rococo flower on the bow, butt-cap with a trophy on the tang, two ramrod-pipes, and a pair of sling swivels, and associated ramrod 39.5 cm; 15 1/2 in barrel Michael Hutchinson, son-in-law of Francis Lord, is recorded at 8 Dame Street, Dublin in 1796 and 1806. A FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS BY WILLIAM 2 NICHOLSON, NO. 45 CORNHILL, LONDON, TOWER PRIVATE PROOF MARKS, CIRCA 1790 with brass barrel formed in five stages divided by raised mouldings, belled at the muzzle, signed over the breech and sparsely engraved at each end of the latter, engraved iron tang, signed stepped lock fitted with large roller, full stock (cracked), inlaid with silver scrolls around the tang (small losses), engraved brass mounts comprising trigger-guard decorated with a rococo flower on the bow and with acorn finial, solid side-plate, butt-plate with a rococo shell on the tang, vacant escutcheon, two ramrod-pipes (one dented), and iron ramrod, probably the original 36.0 cm; 14 in barrel William 2 Nicholson is recorded at this address circa 1786-94.

A RARE 12-BORE D.B. NEEDHAM PATENT NEEDLE-FIRE SPORTING GUN BY JOSEPH NEEDHAM & CO, 26 PICCADILLY LONDON, NO 1051, CIRCA 1854-60 with rebrowned twist barrels signed in block capitals on the rib, signed scroll-engraved breech bolts each fitted with safety-catch and numbered inside and out, figured walnut half-stock (minor bruising), chequered grip and fore-end, finely engraved iron mounts including numbered trigger-guard decorated with a large hound on the bow, butt-cap with a pair of game birds on the tang, silver escutcheon engraved with the owner's initial, 'WD', horn fore-end cap, and the butt previously fitted with a pad on the left 83.9 cm; 33 in barrels Joseph and William Needham traded as Joseph Needham & Co circa 1854-70. The present gun incorporates patent number 184 of 1852.
ϒ A late 1940s coral, emerald and diamond brooch/pendant designed by Afro Basaldella for Masenza, circa 1949, the figures of the reclining Venus and winged Cupid with bow and arrow, with rubover set eight cut diamond eyes, on a branch of coral (corallium rubrum), with carved emerald leaves, with possible partial rubbed signature MA, 10cm long; together with a 1950s artist ring, the shoulders in the form of two stylised acrobats supporting the now void setting, finger size O, 8.6g This brooch with its original collar necklace (now missing) was first exhibited by Masenza in his Milan exhibition 'Gioilelli Di Masenza' in December 1949, and was also published in an article in Moda magazine on 16 December 1949. Masenza promoted Italian artist jewellers and jewellery sculptors, including Edgarado Mannucci, Franco Cannilla, and Mirko and Afro Basadella amongst others from the late 1940s right through to the early 1980s from his jewellery shop in the Via Del Corso, in the heart of Rome. Masenza is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the artist jeweller movement in mid to late 20th century Italian jewellery design.
