A long-time resident in London, he retired to New York and decided to pass on the antiquities and coins he had collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing some lovely examples, also contained many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. They are always finely made and gilded; some bear inset garnet cloisons. They occur in pairs in women's graves, worn at the shoulders to pin a tubular dress or shawl in place.
