4th century AD. A gilt-bronze crossbow brooch with three domed knops, deep bow, rectangular foot plate with catchplate and pin to the reverse. 53 grams, 75mm (3"). The Chris Rudd collection, Norfolk, UK; formed since the 1970s; collection number C26; formerly in the Fabulous Fibulas collection, Southern UK; formed in the 1980s and 1990s. Chris Rudd has collected ancient coins and antiquities since the 1940s. As an amateur archaeologist he found many himself at Badbury Rings, Dorset, 1952-53. He also dug at Hod Hill with Professor Sir Ian Richmond and at Wroxeter with Dame Kathleen Kenyon and Dr Graham Webster. Today he is best known as a Celtic coin dealer. His catalogues have been described as ‘an important research source’ by Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe and ‘treasure houses of delight’ by Dr Anne Ross. Coins and artefacts associated with Chris Rudd – as a collector, dealer and valuer – can be seen in The British Museum and other museums. This collection was formed since the 1970s. Very fine condition.
2nd century AD. A silver-gilt brooch, variant of the knee brooch type, with hexagonal-section tube and slot for the pin, curved bow with openwork scroll, transverse ribbed collar, waisted footplate with scooped profile, knop finial, catch to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, item 1232 for type. 12 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). From an old European collection; acquired in Munich in the 1970s. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
Late 19th-early 20th century AD. A silver-gilt belt with loop border, shield shaped devices to each with central boss and lozenge to the top and bottom; wire work bow shaped buckle with rosette to the centre and three pendant tassels; hook to the back. 239 grams, 81cm (31 3/4"). Ex Swiss collection; acquired 1980s. Fine condition.
2nd millennium BC-20th century AD. A mixed group of detector finds including a gilt openwork finger ring, a 1906 token calendar, beehive and other thimbles, pre- and post-decimal coinage, bronze buckles, a brass bangle, a dagger pommel, an enamelled harness pendant, bronze belt fittings, fragment of a lead goat, a small-long brooch, a casket key, a Colchester-type bow brooch, an agate intaglio, a crotal bell and other material. 1.4 kg total, 1.5-12cm (3/4 - 4 3/4"). Found Kelvedon area, Essex, UK, 2015-2017. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Russia, Round, rifled, 16 mm cal. barrel, provided with fore-sight and adjustable rear-sight, re-finished, with remains of numbering, stamps and mark with bow and arrow at the base. Brass breech block with iron bolt, with stamps and various numbering. Backward spring lock dated '1864' and letters in Cyrillic. In working order. Wooden, full stock (repairs and one break). Brass and iron mounts, bands with remains of stamps and marks with arrow and bow. Iron ramrod. length 135 cm.
dating: 19th Century provenance: Malaysia, Wide, undulated, double-edged blade, in pamor, the base with a curl; wooden ukiran embossed in Garuda style, with silver wire selut and silver mendak decorated with filigree; wooden warangka, silver foil pendok partially embossed with floral motifs and covered with silver wire binding, decorated with cabochon stones above the bow and suspension rosette. length 44 cm.
A Prussian 1871 pattern Cavalry sword, the 91cm curved fullered blade etched with various figures and stamped Solingen to the back edge, having a D-shaped knuckle bow and leather covered grip, in a steel scabbard, 107cm.
