A swept hilt rapier, blade 33.25 in., etched decoration including an eagle under a crown surmounted by a cross; hilt formed of flattened oval-section bars, the main elements decorated at the mid-points and the terminals with sunk relief depictions of nudes in the classical manner, outward turning back quillon, arms rising from the quillon block to support a pas-d'βne, one outer and three inner side bars sweeping down to the the knuckle bow, tapered cylindrical pommel with stippled finish, braided wire bound grip, 17th century.

A 17th century cup hilt rapier, slender blade 39 in. with flamboyant edges, short fuller marked IACOB BRACH SOLINGEN; cup shaped guard with pierced and chased decoration composed of four tiers of staggered hoops each occupied by a fleur de lis, interior lined with a smaller concave plate - similarly embellished, long quillons and knuckle bow of twist and beaded form and with flower head terminals, compressed spherical pommel chased with fleurs de lis, grip bound with braided silver wire.

A swept hilt rapier, diamond-section blade 43 in.; the guard formed of oval section bars, two long quillons, arms supporting a side ring, a series of transverse bars proceeding from the arms and from the quillon block and converging with the knuckle bow which terminates in a simplified representation of a monstrous head, flattened pommel with four concave faces, one engraved with a gothic 'F' and another with a drake (apparently an allusion to Sir Francis Drake).

A rare French uniform sword of the Ιcole de Mars, c. 1794, double edged blade 20.5 in., stylised cast brass hilt, angular langets with Phrygian caps in relief, drooping quillons and angular knuckle bow of iron, wooden scabbard bound in brass (incomplete chape). Designed for the pupils of the short lived revolutionary military college, the Ιcole de Mars (formed and disbanded in 1794), by the neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David.

λThree Inuit implements Alaska, 19th century walrus ivory, including two ice picks, one pierced and with a tenon end, 38.6cm and the other with a faceted end with incised lines, 42.7cm long, and a bow drill, one side incised a figure next to a large net, one end with an inventory number 1282, 44.3cm long. (3) Provenance A private collection, Canada. The ice picks were attached to the butt end of harpoons and used for breaking the ice around a seal hunting hole.

An Inuit bow Pacific, Alaska cedar, with a channeled ridge to the flat side and with intricately woven sinew to the back, early 19th century, 136.6cm long. Provenance Collected by British artist Frederick Whymper (1838-1901) who arrived in Victoria from England in 1862 to set about on a sketching tour of northern British Columbia. In 1863 he joined as an artist the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition and in November 1864 an exhibition of 33 of his drawings was held in Victoria. In 1865 Whymper joined as an artist the Russian-American Telegraph project, which intended to construct a telegraph line linking the United States and Europe through British Columbia, Alaska and Siberia. In 1867 the project was abandoned and Whymper returned to England and published his narrative, Travel and Adventure in the Territory of Alaska. A private collection, Canada. cf.
