SCHONNER ""AVISO GREIF"" LIVE STEAM GUN BOAT. Believed to be the largest version of this particular early 20th century boat that Schonner produced (37-1/2"" l). Not as complicated and detailed as Marklin boats, but somehow in its simplicity, it is quite appealing and intrinsically pleasing. A bevy of smokestacks, funnels, lifeboats, and mounted guns further add to the appeal of this wonderful toy. Live steam motor is contained within the hull of the boat under the cabin area and powers the twin screw propellers. Professionally restored a number of years ago and aging has set in to give it an original appearance.Schonner tended to use some lifelike features including cast davits to lower the lifeboats, and a pair of smaller signal masts (red/green) along with a fancifully cast yardarm on the bow of the boat. Boat is supported by a wheeled framework for display or perhaps to pull it along the floor (of more recent vintage). SIZE: 37-1/2"" l. CONDITION: Overall some uniform chipping and paint flaking, most notably to the right underside of hull. 1-13650
GUNTHERMANN WIND UP BASS PLAYER. Gunthermann during the earlier part of the 20th century manufactured a prolific amount of wind up toys with a variety of different subjects or themes. This particular toy depicts a top hatted black dude standing atop of a trapezoidal base playing his musical instrument but when the mechanism is wound his right arm proceeds to activate the bow while his top hat tips and dips upon his head. Painted in vibrant colors this black gentlemen has a somewhat comical look about his face and the toy itself speaks of the political, economical and social climate of the time period, but then again toys for many years were always based on these factors. SIZE: 9-1/2"" t. CONDITION: Overall paint is fair to good with some weak areas that certainly could use some enhancement. Wire extending from body and connecting to arm is loose and needs a dab of glue or a touch of solder to adhere arm to said wire. 1-13719

LATE 19TH CENTURY EARLY 20TH CENTURY CLOCKWORK BOAT. Of unknown manufacture but more than likely produced by some small firm as it is too well executed to be a homemade toy. Constructed mostly of wood with vibrant original painting (some alligatoring to finish) having a very large and somewhat complicated wind up motor within its hull to activate the 4 bladed propeller. The hull for the most part is one large piece of wood, which has been shaped and hollowed out, containing the clockwork motor. The cabins on the deck for the most part are painted wood with the exception of the pilot house which is painted tin and a painted tin structure covering the motor. More than likely it had two wood masts which are presently missing. It has an adjustable front rudder on the bow, which is a bit of an oddity and lacking rudder at stern. A very interesting and unique boat that has a certain appeal, especially due to its overall originality. Clockwork mechanism is untested but appears complete and functional? SIZE: 29"" l. CONDITION: Overall very good to fine. Main paint loss to top railing edges. 7-70453
