A GERMAN PISTOL CROSSBOW, CIRCA 1830 with slender steel bow retained by a central screw, fitted with string of twisted cord, probably the original, octagonal brass `pistol` barrel interrupted by a vacant oval towards the median, fitted with blued fore-and back-sights, engraved case-hardened tang covering the action and fitted with notched nut, double set trigger, walnut tiller cut with a panel of chequering over the fore-end and the butt, brass trigger-guard with neoclassical finial and engraved with a bouquet on the bow, and brass fore-end cap 40cm; 15 3/4in Provenance Robin Wigington
A GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW, LATE 16TH CENTURY with steel bow struck with the two marks (Neue Støckel 6451) retained by later cords, fitted with an adjustable steel collar joined by a steel stirrup on each side of the tiller and later string, hardwood tiller veneered with engraved staghorn plaques top and bottom, the latter decorated with two allegorical figures including fortune beneath the bow, a green man mask centring on an aperture for inserting loading rods, and profile masks on each side of the mechanism, the sides of the tiller finely inlaid with engraved staghorn plaquettes, including a running pattern of scrolling foliage, ball flowers and profile masks, the top of the tiller fitted with a later wooden bar for use as a slurbow, iron nut, iron trigger-guard and a pair of iron lugs for loading (the inlay with minor losses and wear, small chips, the butt-plate missing) 59cm; 23 1/4in tiller Literature Dr. J. Fastenau, Die Waffensammlung, 1910, no. 184. It would appear that this was modified for use as a slurbow in the early 19th century, probably when the string and cords were replaced.
A FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS OF LIVERY TYPE BY WOGDON AND BARTON, CIRCA1795 with iron barrel tapering towards the muzzle (pitted), signed on the breech flat, stamped with London proof marks and the barrelsmith`s mark `RW` for Robert Wogdon, tang of shaped outline, signed stepped bolted lock, figured walnut full stock (one small crack opposite the lock), brass mounts comprising trigger-guard with scalloped finial, butt-plate with tang of shaped outline, a pair of engraved side-nail washers and two moulded ramrod-pipes, and original horn-tipped wooden ramrod 71cm; 28in barrel Wogdon and Barton worked together at 14 Haymarket circa 1795-1803, and were gunmakers to the Bow Street Police 1796-98 and 1801-03.

REIBICHLER IN MUNCHEN CIRCA 1841-3 with etched twist octagonal barrel rifled with seven grooves, engraved with a band of foliage and inlaid with a silver line at the muzzle, signed in gold in a silver frame over the breech and inlaid with a further silver line, a pair of gold lines and scrollwork, scroll-engraved breech tang decorated with a pair of hounds in a rondel, with provision for a peep-sight behind, flush-fitting lock signed in a brass-lined recessed oval, decorated with a trophy-of-arms and with a mounted hunter in pursuit of a stag in an enclosure, double set trigger, figured walnut full stock, finely carved with a pattern of scale chequering at the fore-end and the grip, the butt carved with a green man mask beneath, with raised cheek-piece on the left and patchbox with sliding cover on the right, engraved steel mounts including side-plate formed of a pair of mirrored serpents, butt-plate with a rampant lion in a landscape, inscribed `no.188` and with birds-of-prey on the tang, wooden trigger-guard decorated with a baying hound on the bow and with engraved steel terminal, three blued steel ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap, and steel ramrod 61cm; 24in barrel This maker is recorded in Munich circa 1841-43.
A .700 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE BY ANTONI STEINGASTINGER A PRAG, CIRCA 1760 with signed octagonal swamped sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, chiselled with a band of beadwork and numbered `No. 887` at the breech, gilt-brass back-sight, engraved tang numbered `2`, signed rounded lock finely chiselled with a cavalryman engaged by a pair of pikemen beneath the pan, figured walnut full stock carved with rococo scrolls behind the ramrod-pipe and about the tang (the fore-end with an early repair), the butt with raised cheek-piece on the left and fitted with patchbox with fluted sliding cover on the right, gilt-brass mounts cast and chased with rococo ornament comprising two-piece side-plate each formed as scrolling tendril issuant with a serpent (the third serpent missing), butt-plate decorated with rococo ornament inhabited by a figure on the tang, trigger-guard decorated with a classical warrior on the bow, and reinforced at the rear with piece of carved wood, and three engraved ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap, and horn-tipped wooden ramrod 73cm; 28 3/4in barrel Antoni Steingastinger is recorded in Prague and Vienna circa 1762.
A FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN FOR PRESENTATION TO AN EASTERN POTENTATE, DATED 1816 with two-stage swamped `Spanish` barrel fitted with silver `spider` fore-sight, chiselled with a band of acanthus on a gilt ground at the girdle, inscribed `En Eybar de Herraduras ano de 1816` in silver enclosed by sprays of silver foliage over the breech and stamped with the barrelsmith`s marks, `J-Hybara`, and a series of gold-lined decorative marks (losses), gold-lined vent, engraved tang, flush-fitting lock chiselled with scrolling foliage on a gilt ground (losses), pierced cock decorated en suite, semi-rainproof pan (previously gold-lined), figured walnut full stock cut with a panel of chequering at the fore-end and the grip (small chips, inlaid over the greater part of its surface with engraved silver floral plaquettes and silver wire scrollwork, the butt inlaid with a brief inscription on each side of the spine and decorated with further designs including a pair of cornucopia and a vase on each side of the butt (the silver inlays and wire with losses and replacements), silver mounts stamped with eastern or North African marks, comprising solid side-plate decorated with trophies-of-arms, trigger-guard decorated with trophies on the bow and rococo ornament on the finial, butt-plate en suite, three ramrod-pipes, and a pair of sling swivels (later ramrod) 91cm; 35 7/8in barrel The inscription is of North African type and reads `amal al-hajj al-sadiq idris`, in translation `The work of the sincere pilgrim, Idris`.

He is recorded behind the Royal Exchange at Threadneedle Street and was Member and Armourer of the Honourable Artillery Company from 1733.
