Late Iron Age, a complete cast copper-alloy La Téne III/Drahtfibel Derivative type bow brooch dating c. 50 BC-AD 50. The brooch is of one piece construction, demonstrating a wound head with pin, circular-sectioned plain bow and expanded sub-rectangular catchplate at its foot, a very small portion of which is broken away in old damage. Preserved in extremely good condition, bright green patina. Length: Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
Roman, a lot of three copper-alloy bow brooches of 1st or 2nd century date. Two complete, one missing its pin and part spring. Colchester Derivative (double-lug subtype), Trumpet Derivative and 'T' shaped types (the latter an impressively sized example). Lengths: 40-50mm.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
Roman, a complete copper-alloy bow brooch dating c. AD 43-120. Colchester Derivative 'Polden Hill' type, preserved intact with winged head (demonstrating plain end-caps), double-fluted bow and integral catchplate. Condition: good, patchy light greenish patina, fairly rare to survive with pin. Length: Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
Roman, a complete copper-alloy tumbler lock slide key dating c. AD 43-410. The object consists a circular bow set atop a thickened rectangular stem (divided by a transverse collar), below which the stem and bit extend-the latter jutting off at a right angle and demonstrating two adjacent clefts and wards respectively. Condition: very good, even greenish patina. Length: 42mm.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
Roman, a copper-alloy bow brooch of Colchester Derivative 'Polden Hill' type, dating c. AD 43-120. This example is of impressive size, missing only its pin. It demonstrates a winged head with end-caps and decorative reeded collars on its front edge. The back face of the had still retains the spring and axis bar, one part of the latter threaded through a projecting lug and the pin missing in an old break. The bow curves strongly in section and is 'D' shaped in section, plain with the exception of its upper portion-which demonstrates a low crest decorated with a two parallel rows of circular dimples. The bow tapers towards its knopped terminal, the lower section coincident with an integral catchplate. The latter is triangular in plan, with a rolled back edge and three sub-rectangular decorative cutout sections at its midpoint. Scarce in this condition and state of completeness. Length: c. 67mm. Width across head: c. 47mm. Discussion: compare Hattatt (2012) fig. 159 for the general type, most similar to nos. 374 and 898.Reference: Hattatt, R. 2012. A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattat's Ancient Brooches. Oxford: Oxbow Books.
Early Anglo-Saxon, copper-alloy 'radiate headed' type bow brooch, probably of late 5th to early 6th century date. The brooch is mostly intact, excepting for its foot, catchplate and pin. Demonstrating a semi-circular head with three integral knops, the bow is 'D' shaped in section and facetted-demonstrating two sections of closely-spaced horizontal incisions. Below this, the upper foot projects, showing two stamped ring-dot motifs on its upper face before truncating irregularly in old damage. Additional decoration is also visible on the head, in the form of a single, central compass-drawn concentric circular motif. On the reverse face of the head, a single projecting pin-lug is visible. Dark green patina covering most of the object, some encrustation visible on head. Length: 54mm. Discussion: radiate-headed brooches are best known as Frankish finds, some being extremely ornate with inlaid garnets and manufactured from silver as well as copper. Large numbers appear to have travelled (with or without their owners/manufacturers) beyond mainland Europe, especially to Britain and southern Scandinavia. Provenance: ex A Smith collection.
Middle Anglo-Saxon, virtually complete copper-alloy strap end dating c. AD 750-900. This example probably is best attributed to Thomas' (2000, p. 89) class A, type 2a: strap ends of convex form decorated in the Trewhiddle style, with geometric curvilinear motifs. It is of broadly sub-triangular form in plan view, with a thinned apex demonstrating two adjacent circular rivet holes (now missing) that expands to its midpoint before tapering sharply to form a zoomorphic terminal in the form of an animal's head. The main body of the strap end is infilled with symmetrical curvilinear decoration in the form of tendrils with lobed ends that bow and knot around each other. This design is perhaps designed to be evocative of two vine-like plants, one sprouting from each end of the central field. Interestingly, this design is perhaps more evocative of the later Early Medieval 'Winchester style', which employs frequent use of symmetrical vegetal motifs Condition: very good, despite some wear to terminal and a small amount of encrustation, nicely patinated. Length: 42mm.Reference: Thomas, G. 2000. A Survey of Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking-Age Strap Ends from Britain. UCL/IOA: unpublished PhD thesis.Provenance: found Ravensden, Bedfordshire, 2014. Recorded on the PAS as BH-44ED75.
