[EDWARD IV]: (1442-1483) King of England 1461-70. An extremely rare and reasonably substantial lock of dark brown hair removed from the tomb of King Edward IV in 1789, the strands neatly braided together and mounted in a circle with a bow at the head around an oval blue and gold vignette bearing the King’s initials and year of his death, mounted beneath glass within a small circular cream coloured 19th century box, the inside of the lid bearing an ink annotation in an unidentified hand and stating, in full, ‘King Edward the fourth was buried in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor in 1483. His tomb was opened in 1789 when a lock of hair was taken of his head of which the enclosed is a sample’. Royal relics of any nature dating back to the 15th century are of the utmost rarity and are highly desirable. An attractive presentation. VG The discovery of King Edward IV’s tomb vault, which he shared with his Queen, Elizabeth Woodville, is well documented, not least in The Vault, Body, and Monument of Edward IV in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor (Carliol, Emlyn & Lind, 1790). On 14th March 1789 the tomb was found by workers and opened in the presence of Carliol, Emlyn and Lind, all members of the Society of Antiquaries. Emlyn reported that the King’s remains were not particularly well embalmed and that the lead coffin had been compromised, although also observed that the monarch’s complete skeleton was present, with some brown hair near its head and some by its neck, likely the remains of a beard. It has also been stated, in an early twentieth century publication entitled Guide to Windsor that the coffin was ransacked on the same day and that hair, teeth, fingers, fabric and metal objects were taken. Furthermore, St. George’s Chapel holds a contemporary diarist’s account of being presented with King Edward IV’s hair, and some wood, both of which were covered in a sticky brown substance (a glutinous liquid is known to have immersed the skeleton). This latter account was presented by E. Mildreda Fisher in 1976 and she identified the diarist as her great-grandfather Maberly.
