Traysman, Ode to Joy, Pinakotheke Moscow, 2008, pp. 360–367.Realistically modelled, wearing beige lampas trousers, a maroon brown overcoat, a purple vest over a white chemise with a black bow tie, leaning cunningly over a chair draped with a violet and purple striped cover, on a circular white base, with blue manufactory and incised marks, further numbered ‘22’ in black.Gogol’s series depict the époque’s take on one of the most cherished Russian author. Created between 1945–1954, these porcelain figurines of favourite characters not only evoke the familiar literary prototypes but also highlight the pathos of the Stalinist era. Gestures and lively mimicry, along with the colourful palette, enhance the theatricality and distinctiveness achieved by the longstanding tradition of craftsmanship and the imaginations of the leading artists of the time.
A pair of miniature paintings on ivory, probably early 20th century, both depicting classical female figures in clouds, surrounded by seven playful Putti, signed with monogram MF, in rectangular square shouldered ormolu frames, the upper area with cabochon cartouche and tied bow surmount, each side with floral and foliate trails, acanthus decoration to lower section finished with floral swag, on scrolled acanthus feet, 3 x 2¼in. (7.6 x 5.7cm.). (2) * Condition: Excellent condition. No visible signs of wear.
Two Japanese ivory netsukes, 19th century, one depicting a male dancing with a fan, dressed in a robe tied with bow to back, 2in. (5.2cm.) high; the second as a female with teapot opposite a male figure drinking from a large cup, signature to base, 1¾in. (4.5cm.) long. (2) * Condition: Man with fan: Made in two sections of ivory - the joint has become unglued. Otherwise good with good patina.Couple: Good cdn., with no damage.
A 19th century French rose marble and ormolu three piece clock garniture, Japy Freres signed eight day bell chime movement, no. 520241, within an ormolu drum form case with flaming torch and quiver surmount, the Arabic white enamel dial with painted swags of pink roses, pierced gilt hands, on ormolu mounted rose marble waisted pedestal and wider base, with bronze winged cherub to the right holding a bow, on gilt toupie feet, 13½in. (34.25cm.) high, the matching pedestal urns of ovoid form, with ormolu fruit finals and rams head mounts, 10in. (25.4cm.) high. (3)
A rococo gilt metal Louis XV style mantel clock, late 19th century, by the Ansonia Clock Co., signed to 52mm. Roman enamel dial and backplate, typical rococo style floral and foliate decoration with standing cupid figure, his right hand holding an arrow pierced heart, his left hand bearing a bow, a sash worn quiver to his left hip, the rococo base supported on four scroll feet, 8½in. (21.5cm.) high.
