Robert Hill, Penrith, A VICTORIAN MAHOGANY-CASED 30-HOUR LONG-CASE CLOCK having a flat hood with square door between turned columns, the ogee arch-topped and inlaid trunk door between bow-fronted pilasters, above an inlaid panel and plain base with short bracket feet, the white-painted dial inscribed "R. Hill/PENRITH", the spandrels painted with roses and other flowers on a red ground, 202.5cm, (79.7in) high (sold with weight and pendulum) *** Literature: See Penfold, John. B., The Clockmakers of Cumberland, Brant Wright Associates, 1977, p.121. Two Robert Hills are recorded, the father lived 1780-1842, the son (Robert Bliss Hill) 1824 - c.1880. Penfold records "only two Hill clocks seem to be known", one a clock signed by the latter as R.B. Hill, indicating this example may be a late clock by the father.

Ex Crossrigg Hall AN EARLY 20TH-CENTURY MAPLE & Co, MAHOGANY BOW-FRONTED DRESSING CHEST, the superstructure having a bevelled oblong mirror between reeded uprights with spire finials, above an inverted breakfront shelf with two bow-fronted drawers beneath, the lower section with gadrooned edge on two short and two long cockbeaded drawers with brass swan-neck bale handles, on slightly splayed bracket feet, 117cm x 57cm x 165cm high, (46in x 22.5in x 65in), one top drawer with oval plaque of Maple & Co plus pencil inscription "27/6/17" *** Provenance: Lot 87, Crossrigg Hall Dispersal Sale, Sotheby's, Tuesday 13th September 1994, purchased as a gift for for the current owner (then a member of staff at Crossrigg)
A 19TH CENTURY FRENCH BRASS BOW FRONTED FOUR GLASS MANTEL CLOCK, the floral decorated cream enamel dial supporting a French twin train movement, gong strike, with a mercury pendulum, stamped JR & Co., No. 634, the case with pierced balustrade ornament to the pediment and base, raised on inverted cup feet, 11 1/2 ins high.
