Gunter (Edmund) The Works...Containing the Description and Use of his Sector, Cross-staff, Bow, Quadrant, and other Instruments, 6 parts in 1, fourth edition, additional engraved title, 2 plates, volvelle on p.64 supplied in facsimile, woodcut diagrams and illustrations, 2 advertisement leaves at end, 17th century inscriptions to title and penultimate leaf, later boards with modern calf spine, edges of covers worn, modern cloth drop-back box, [Tomash & Williams G103; Wing G2240], 4to, by W.L. for Francis Eglesfield, 1662.⁂ Gunter was an English clergyman, mathematician, geometer and astronomer, who in 1619 became Gresham Professor of Astronomy. He was primarily interested in the application of mathematics to real world tasks. The volume includes discussion of Gunter's chain, quadrant and scale, which were employed in astronomical, navigational and dialling calculations. The work was partly edited and published by William Leybourn, best known for his 1669 work on sundials and astrolabes. Leybourn had also published second and third editions of the Gresham Professor Samuel Foster's work on dialling and includes in the present volume sections devoted to Foster's work on instruments 'now published from his manuscripts'.Provenance: "Moray" (old signature on penultimate leaf); old inscription on title "Ex libris Bib. [?] C R M Ednb".
Late 19th Century violin, well-carved lion headed terminal with protruding red-painted tongue, two-piece back with purfling, apparently unmarked with no internal label visible, 59.5cm long, together with a nickel-plated mother-of-pearl inlaid bow in ebonised wooden hard case Condition: A few minor knocks to edges of front board but no splitting, dark scratch to reverse is only superficial.
