A Pair of Carved Oak Smoker's Bow Chairs, by Arthur Romney Green (1872-1945), with chip carved decoration, monogrammed and dated 1920, 74cm . These chairs cost £15.15.0 the pair.. For an example of the chip carving see Greensted (Mary) Gimson and the Barnsleys' Wonderful Furniture of a Commonplace Kind, Sutton Publishers 2001, p.192, fig.146.. Arthur Romney Green. He was inspired by William Morris's teachings. He was a teacher by profession also a boat builder, poet and writer on social reform. He visited Gimson in 1904 and admired the Cotswold school's work. Green started his workshop at Haslemere then moved to Hammersmith but, by 1921, was at Bridge Street, Christchurch, in Hampshire. Exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society from 1926 and also showed work abroad in Paris, Milan and America. Eric Sharpe worked with Green for eight years. Provenance. Revd Percy Dearmer, and thence by descent to the present owners.
An Italian bronze group of Nessus and Deianeira, attributed to Francesco Fanelli, second half 17th century, the centaur with head to dexter, his bow held in his right hand, his quiver hanging to his left side, Deianeira seated on his back, a barking dog beneath them on the rectangular base cast with rockwork, 19cm high, 18cm long overall, (losses). A BELGIAN 20-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN SIGNED GUILLAUME BERLEUR, circa 1800, with 33 1/8in. rebrowned twist barrels, silver fore-sight, border and foliate engraved tang and signed locks, the latter each with rounded rainproof pan and roller, figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece and carved with a boar's head behind the grip, chequered grip and fore-end heightened with silver pins, engraved iron mounts including shaped trigger-guard decorated with a fox on the bow and trigger-guard with pedestal finial with a swan above and two chained bears below, and brass-tipped ramrod (iron parts with scattered surface pitting), Liege proof.
