A heavy octagonal brass commemorative plate. An octagonal brass plate (50cm in diameter). In the centre is a mixed laurel and oak wreath (oak leaves on the right, laurel on the left side, joined by a bow) within which are the the letters ‘HK’ intertwined. Around the outside are 8 scenes, dated from 1912 through to 1919, representing stages of the individual’s life. He is shown in overcoat and bowler style hat, on his way to join the military in 1912; by 1915 he is working on the observation balloons, then in 1916 he is an armourer on Zeppelins. In 1917 he is shown flying an Albatros DIII, involved in the German Revolution of 1918 before finally he takes up peaceful labour as a blacksmith in 1919. Most of the images are naive, but the technical images and the central wreath are well done. The plate is slightly depressed in the centre, so the reverse is scored and marked where it has rested on the ground. Interesting item in GC.
