A Painted Silk Fan, dated 1889, the double leaf mounted on plain ivory sticks, a riot of colourful birds amidst branches bursting with white blossom, the painting signed to the left ''Amy 1889''. The verso, of cream glazed cotton, is plain. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with A Large Bone Fan of the Late 1900's, the monture lightly incised in fairly regular patterns, the cream leaf of gauze painted in soft blues and violet with dragonflies hovering over water, the insects and flower heads embellished with tiny silver sequins. The painting is bordered with machine lace in ribbon and bow design, and the verso is plain. Guard length 15.75 inches or 35cm (2)The silk fan is sound with good strong colour. The ivory has some slight staining in places and the cotton fabric to the verso (which is generally strong) has split to the extreme right and extreme left and is fraying. Very slight foxing to the verso. The second fan has a repair on third down on the upper guard. One split fold noted to the left of centre, and to the right of the leaf several little nibbles and one slightly larger can be noted, two folds at this point are weak but holding.
A Neo-Classical Fan, circa 1790, the gorge of ivory, the guards worked in a gold metal, the upper sections incised and set with paste in regular lines, the gorge sticks carved and pierced. The double stipple engraved silk leaf is extensively embroidered with tiny gold sequins, bordering a central cartouche showing classical maidens, Cupid with his bow, and other winged cherubs, probably a depiction of the toilet of Venus, and two side vignettes painted with ladies next to trees with winged cherubs in the shadows. Elsewhere there are four blue ovals in Wedgewood style, and sequins fill any reserves. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm Purchased at Christie's SK on the 13th May 1980 for £150.00. According to the Christie's catalogue, the fan was believed to have belonged to Queen Caroline. The Queen, wife of George II, died in 1837. Queen Caroline, (b 1768), wife of the Prince Regent, was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820 and nominally Queen 1820-21, George IV having refused to have her crowned. In a few minor areas the recto silk has perished but is well supported by both the verso layer and the propensity of sequins.
