Lot 505

Of Suffragette Interest: a sterling silver enamelled medal fob, with a gold portcullis to royal blue enamel ground, with gold ribbon below. Engraved verso 'W.F.L., DIV. I., 1914'. Chester 1914, by Croneen New Brompton, 43 x 31mm, suspended on an Albertina chain, with silver pin set open-faced fob watch, engraved to the cuvette 'Lily Sutton, Basingstoke, Hants, 1908'.The initials ‘W.F.L.’ engraved on the medal refer to the Women's Freedom League (WFL), a suffrage group formed in 1907. The WFL was comprised of members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WPSU) who were unhappy with the Pankhursts' decision to rule without democratic process, and so established a separate organisation. Like the WSPU, the WFL agitated for women's voting rights, but used direct action such as passive resistance, non-cooperation with the census and refusal to pay taxes, rather than attacks on people and property.Perhaps the most famous protest for which the WFL is known, is that of the ‘Grille Incident’ of 1908. On 28 October, members of the WFL chained themselves to a grille above a window in the Ladies’ Gallery of the House of Commons. Law enforcement arrived but, unable to undo the chains attached to the grille, the police were forced to remove the suffragettes to a nearby room with the grille still attached, whereupon a blacksmith was called to detach the women. The portcullis motif references a term of imprisonment and Div. I. refers to first division prisoners. The portcullis is the same motif as used for the Holloway brooch, or 'Portcullis badge', designed by Sylvia Pankhurst and presented by the WPSU to women who had been imprisoned at Holloway Prison for militant suffragette activity. In the Home Office 'Index of Suffragettes Arrested', there is an L Sutton listed with an imprisonment or trial date at Bow Street on the 9 July 1909. It is possible that the 'L Sutton' listed is the Lily Sutton whose name is engraved on the fob watch.

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Modern Icebreaker - Louis S. St. Laurent" Signed lower left. Original Oil Painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canadian 14c Labrador stamp issued November 15, 1978. Schooner-rigged ships built with oak hulls thick enough to withstand the tremendous pressures of ice once forged a wake into the remote channels of the Canadian north. Skippered by men of dauntless strength and skill, these early ice vessels often pushed back the frozen frontier and accomplished the impossible. Today, even greater accomplishments are possible as armor-clad icebreakers charge and smash their way through ten feet of ice pack, opening important waterways like the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes system in the winter, and the Arctic channels in the summer. The largest Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker is the steel giant, Louis S. St. Laurent, named after a distinguished Canadian Prime Minister. The St. Laurent is 366 feet long and equipped with enough turboelectric drive to muscle her way through the viselike grip of the ice pack. When challenged, she rides up onto the ice pack using the ship's weight as the force behind the driving wedge of the bow. Many icebreakers are built with enormous holding tanks so that in the event they should become locked in ice, water is taken aboard and then pumped out alternately from the bow and stern; a violent movement that rocks the icebreaker and releases it from the ice. Canada's fleet of icebreakers has opened a new era in the exploration of the Arctic, and in the development of Canada's inaccessible northern areas where mining projects are underway. Image Size: 19 x 20 in. Overall Size: 22 x 26 in. Unframed. (B06163)

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Sinking of HMS Royal Oak" Original Oil Painting on Canvas Board. With Artist notes on cover. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Sinking of HMS Royal Oak 1939 stamp issued October 13, 1989. Brilliant Northern Lights illuminated the sky on the night of October 13, 1939, as German Lieutenant Gunther Prien slipped his U47 undetected into the British naval base at Scapa Flow. Forced to remain on the well-lit surface because of difficulties using its periscope, the U-boat shot a torpedo into the bow of the battleship HMS Royal Oak. When the ship's proud captain refused to believe he was under attack, Prien had time to fire again and send the Royal Oak and 786 men to the sea floor. In the ensuing confusion, the U47 escaped from the harbor, having carried out one of the most daring exploits of the war. Image Size: 9.75 x 15 in. Overall Size: 14.75 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B12142)

100-300 AD. Roman. Gold ring with circular hoop and raised elliptical bezel with dark red gemstone setting incised with a motif of a naked, winged genius holding a bow. In Roman religion, the genius is the individual divinity present in every individual person, place, or thing.
