Homage to Cupid: An Unusual Mid-18th Century Fan, with a double paper leaf (or very thin skin) mounted on tortoiseshell sticks, depicting a classical garden scene with Cupid seated on a pedestal with his bow and arrow beneath, offerings of fruit being presented to him by several young ladies hoping to find true love. A vignette at each side of the main panel show various mythological beasts and fish. The sticks and guards are carved and decorated in symbols, hearts and numbers, such as ''LC'' or ''100'', ''est un'' a shoe, animals and birds, probably a cryptogram or period puzzle for young ladies. The leaf has a simple floral spray on the verso. Guard length 29cm. A blue stone completes the rivet The Education Officer for the Fan Circle International has been able to decipher the puzzle. She suggests as follows: Elle a mille baisers C'est au pied de l'autel que les cÅ“urs sont couronnés Elle sait ravir par sa beauté C'est au pied de l'autel que les cÅ“urs sans attache Aiment, et j'ai cet espoir She has 1000 kisses At the foot of the altar, hearts are crowned She ravishes by her beauty At the foot of the altar, unattached hearts Love, and I have this hope'' This then emphasises that the leaf and the monture have been made specially to complement each other, something not often foundThe gilding is rubbed in places. The leaf is clean and very good for age. The tortoiseshell is very slightly warped.

Lot 153

A Large Circa 1890's Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture plain. The shaded blue gauze leaf is painted with a simple spray of wild roses, white open cups with yellow centres, supported on bone ribs. A narrow border of bobbin lace is attached to the top edge. The verso is plain. Guard length 35cm; and A Large Circa 1890's Ivorine (?) Fan, the guards silvered and simply carved, and painted with flamingos near water, beneath ribbon tied in a bow and entwined with cascading flowers, these details picked out in pastels. The gorge is mainly plain but shaped near the leaf to produce two different borders, one pierced, one painted with tiny flowers. The single black gauze leaf is painted with flamingos wading in water, one very pink, two tinged with pink, and smaller, perhaps the young. Dragonflies hover over the water. The reserves are painted to the left with reeds and wild flowers in soft blue, white and pink, to the right with water lily leaves. Guard length 35cm (2)Fan 1 - Some slight foxing to the leaf, generally and on some folds. Fan 2 - The leaf has one major split, only holding together due to the border braid top and bottom. A well-made fan, the leaf supports being a continuation of the guard sticks and not additions of a different material.

Lot 3

The Rape of Hera: A Mid-18th Century Fan, with mother-of-pearl monture, the sticks finely carved and pierced and heavily gilded, several of the gorge sticks carved into roundels at the shoulders, variously containing squirrels, cockerels, and female heads. A central gilded vignette is backed in mother of pearl depicting a couple playing with a dog. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, with a central couple, a woman (Hera?) being seized from behind by a king (Zeus?). To the left, a carved stone statue of a female, seated on a dolphin (Hera was the daughter of a water God), Cupid drawing his bow and a further winged cherub to the left, another cherub carrying an Olympian flame to the right seemingly keeping at bay a completely black entity with forked red tails and a curved beak, presumably a depiction of Zeus, one of his attributes being forked lightening. The verso with cream reserves depicts a rural manor house. Additionally, there are some names scribbled lightly in pencil, hardly legible but one appears to refer to a Villa Franconi. Guard length 28.5cmThe leaf folds are rubbed as is the left side of the leaf to a greater extent. One stick to the left of the gorge broken near the rivet. The guard gilding is rubbed.
