George William Russell ('AE') (1867-1935) "Portrait of a Young Girl in a white Dress holding Flowers,"  O.O.C.,   62 x 51cms (24 1/2" x 20"). (1) The term 'Celtic Twilight' accurately describes the art of George Russell, with many of his paintings depicting scenes of childhood. He delighted in creating a fantasy world, peopled with mythological beings. In such paintings, suffused with the glow of wistful nostalgia, his figures, generalized rather than specific portraits, are enveloped in a haze. This portrait of a young girl however is more formal, and depicts an actual rather than an imagined person. Dressed in a white muslin pinafore dress over a blue blouse, her dark hair tied with a bow, the girl sits in a chair looking out at the observer with a curiously determined expression. In her hands she holds a small spray of flowers. The background is a uniform brown deepening to a dark shadow behind the girl, and the initials of the painter ?AE? are painted the top right corner. The identity of the sitter is not known; it may be an early portrait of Kitsy Franklin, whose mother Victoria Franklin was the sister of the writer Susan Mitchell, who edited the Irish Statesman and was a close friend of Russell.   Adopting the initials ?AE? as his signature or monogram, Russell is remembered today as one of the leading cultural figures of the Irish Literary Revival. In addition to being a painter, he was also an influential economist, editor, and promoter of rural development. Practical, and well versed in politics and economics, Russell nonetheless also believed in the existence of a spiritual world, inhabited by ethereal beings. Influenced by Symbolist artists such as Gustave Moreau and Puvis de Chavannes, he espoused Theosophy and esoteric religions, giving expression to this vision through a prolific output of paintings, novels, plays and poetry.   Born in Lurgan, Co. Armagh, as a child Russell moved to Dublin with his family. After studying at the Metropolitan School of Art, in 1887 he began working for the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, and edited the IAOS newspaper, the Irish Homestead. Alongside these practical concerns, he found time to study esoteric religions, joining the Dublin Theosophical Society in 1888, and later forming the ?Hermetic Society?. He was also involved with drama, in 1902 becoming vice-president of the Irish National Theatre Society (later the Abbey Theatre Company). His plays include Deirdre, (1902), while his first book of poetry, Homeward: Songs by the Way, published in 1894, was followed by his 1913 Collected Poems. In addition to painting, plays and poetry, Russell wrote on agricultural policy and political theory, in The Building up of a Rural Civilisation (1910), and The National Being (1916). He was highly regarded as an artist, and, in 1913, with the support and encouragement of the lawyer John Quinn, his paintings were shown at the Armory Show in New York. Encouraged also by William Butler Yeats, Russell painted murals depicting his mystical visions, at 3 Upper Ely Place, headquarters of the Theosophical Society. He also painted portraits, of Yeats, Lady Gregory and others. Dr. Peter Murray, Febrauary 2022

POSTCARDS - THE RUSH, BLACK FRIDAY AND THE BATH HOTELCollection of 29 postcards on 3 sheets, comprising: one sheet with 4 printed WSPU postcards depicting the events of 13 October 1908 (the Pankhursts and Mrs Drummond 'inviting the audience to 'rush' the House of Commons' and going to Bow Street the following day with the Pethick Lawrences), and 6 RPPCs depicting scenes on the infamous Black Friday of November 1910; sheet with 8 RPPCs and one printed postcard, mostly of fire at the Bath Hotel, Felixstowe along with the subsequent trial, and revenge attacks; sheet with 4 humorous cards by McGill (2), H.C. Farnshaw and Alfred Leeds, and 6 RPPCs of various buildings targeted by the suffragettes, a few of the cards written and sent, loosely corner-mounted (29)Footnotes:Rare postcards of some of the more noteworthy events of the suffragette era, including the 'Rush' on Parliament which led to the famous trial, 'Black Friday' with its Police and anti-suffragette brutality, and the arson attack on the Bath Hotel in Felixstowe. The cards relating to the fire at the Bath Hotel include three sent by a local resident complaining of 'the havoc wrought by these suffragettes.. the two that are in prison are hunger-striking already'. Another card depicts a large house in St. Leonards which was set on fire in 1913, and was sent by a resident who comments on 'those lunatics who, as you say, ought to be done something to. I think the South Pole would cool them a bit'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 253

TRIAL OF 1909 - THE CURTIS BENNETT PAPERSCollection of fifty-seven letters and postcards to Sir Henry Curtis Bennett from family, friends and members of the public, some anonymous, congratulating him on his imminent knighthood and his promotion to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, showing their support after the '...recent dastardly & diabolic attempt on your life...' and concerns for his safety ('...do be careful of all letters, parcels & visitors to your house...'), all speaking in the strongest terms against the 'vile' and devilish suffragettes ('evil... hysterical maniacs... Let all militants 'starve' themselves...'), supporting his strong stance ('...more power to your elbow...') and suggesting ways he can deal with them ('...the glory of a woman is her hair, if she won't keep quiet cut it off. You would soon put a stop to all this violence...'), several from women ('... I am heartily ashamed of my own sex... if I thought that my little girl (aged 9 months) would grow up like one of these, I would rather lay her to rest, at once... I grant that women should have the vote but they are hindering the good of the Cause...'), one letter from a maid giving the names of suffragettes hiding from the police ('...they are hiding Miss Lillian Linton... I will come forward for the Truth if necessary...'), c. 140 pages, dust-staining, small tears and marks, 4to and 8vo, [various addresses], May 1913; with a copy of the order of service for Curtis Bennett's burial service on 6 June 1913 (quantity)Footnotes:'IF THEY WON'T EAT, LET THEM DIE': letters to the suffragettes' nemesis, Bow Street Magistrate Henry Curtis Bennett. The issue of female suffrage was part of a much wider debate on the equality of the sexes at this time (the so-called 'Woman Question') and this correspondence, prompted by an attempt on the life of the Bow Street Magistrate, serves to demonstrate the widespread public feeling against suffragism in general: '...the anti-suffragists could plausibly claim to speak for a silent majority of men and women who feared that valuable gender differences would be diluted by too much political equality...' (www.bl.uk). What is particularly evident here, however, is their distaste for the militant tactics of the suffragette wing of the movement, whose extreme behaviour certainly isolated many supporters of female suffrage, such as the suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett, who believed that votes for women would and should be achieved by peaceful means. To them, these women are 'savages', 'horrible female miscreants', 'misguided' and 'villainous', displaying 'very un-English' uncivilised behaviour. They are diabolical 'female fiends' and clearly mad ('militancy is another word for insanity'). One correspondent, the architect of Buckingham Palace, Sir Aston Webb, writes of '...the evil machinations of these disgraceful suffragists...'. The women correspondents write just as vociferously as the men. There are several letters from women who are ashamed of their sex - one self-proclaimed 'septuagenarian spinster' suggests flogging, another 'peaceable quiet woman' suggests deportation to the remote island of Staffa in the north of Scotland. On 21 October 1908, at Bow Street Magistrates Court Sir Henry Curtis Bennett (1846-1913) famously tried Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and Flora Drummond for inciting a breach of the peace by circulating a handbill during a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on 13 October urging their WSPU supporters to 'rush' the House of Commons. After a four-day trial, all three were found guilty and sentenced to three months imprisonment. After that he was a marked man. As well as the failed parcel-bomb attempt discussed here, he survived another assassination attempt when two suffragettes attempted to push him over the cliffs at Margate (see London Evening Standard article transcribed on historyoffeminism.com website) after he convicted several suffragettes following a window-smashing raid on the West End, necessitating constant protection from officers of Scotland Yard. In May 1913 he took over as Chief Magistrate from Sir Albert de Rutzen who issued the arrest warrant for Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve. His son Sir Henry Honywood Curtis Bennett became a celebrated barrister and politician. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 254

TRIAL OF 1909The Trial of the Suffragette Leaders, 48pp., portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, stapled in publisher's printed wrappers, front cover with photographic illustration depicting 'Inspector Jarvis reading the Warrant', some soiling, chip to edge of lower cover and foot of spine, 8vo, The Woman's Press, [1909]; together with a sheet of draft notes by the magistrate, Curtis Bennett, possibly for the summing up in the trial, with deletions and amendments, 2 pages, on embossed 'Police Court Bow Street' paper, creased, folio (332 x 206mm.), [October 1908]Footnotes:Extremely scarce pamphlet containing a full account of the 1908 trial of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond, which took place on October 14-24. It includes statements from those involved (beginning with a long speech by Christabel Pankhurst), the evidence of the witnesses, Christabel's cross-examination of David Lloyd George, and the final summing up and sentencing by the Magistrate, Curtis Bennett. His notes sold with the lot indicate he was in no doubt that the handbill published by the WSPU had served to incite large crowds 'to assemble in public to commit a 'wrongful and illegal act' by 'rushing' the House of Commons, thus causing breach of the peace. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The sashes were originally woven by Toye & Co. of Birmingham, who had a large female workforce, and became an essential part of the suffragette uniform. Suffragette accoutrements were retailed through a network of independent shops and department stores such as Selfridges which opened its doors in the same year.Included in the lot are two tickets for the stalls at the WSPU Women's Demonstration held on 10th April 1913. The meeting was chaired by Flora Drummond, standing in for Mrs Pankhurst who was in Holloway. PANKHURST (EMMELINE)Portrait photograph signed 'E.Pankhurst/ Nov. 1913' in ink on the image, depicting Emmeline Pankhurst half-length in a white dress with black buttons and bow tie, photographer's stamp '©/Matzene/Chicago' on the image, 188 x 116mm., framed 330 x 277mm., November 1913Footnotes:EMMELINE PANKHURST IN AMERICA.In the autumn of 1913 Emmeline Pankhurst was on the run after refusing to return to Holloway in June of that year under the terms of the Cat and Mouse Act. She had spent two months in Paris with Christabel and sailed for New York in October. Her arrival caused considerable problems for the American authorities. Strictly speaking, as a convicted criminal, she should have been banned from the country (President Woodrow Wilson called her 'monstrous') but due to pressure from various women's rights groups, after being detained at Ellis Island she was allowed to continue with her visit provided she refrained from encouraging violence. This detention only afforded her more publicity and on a countrywide tour including Chicago where this photograph was taken, she raised over £4,000 for the WSPU. She was rearrested on her embarkation at Plymouth in December 1913 ('Emmeline Pankhurst Comes to America' blog, US National archives website). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
