He is recorded in three entries in the Clockmakers' Company List of Masters and Apprentices, (transcribed from Atkins' list of 1931 by Jeremy Lancelotte Evans). He was bound on 4th September 1699 to Richard Blundell, free on 19th September 1714 and subsequently took on a total of 6 apprentices between 1716 and 1731, the last of which was his son, Peter. Robert Higgs registered his mark of RH within a rectangular cartouche with the London Assay Office on 25th October 1721.Subsequent research kindly carried out by Richard Edgcumbe of the Victoria & Albert museum (Curator of Metalwork and author of 'The Art of the Gold Chaser in Eighteenth Century London' - the definitive reference work on the subject) suggests that there is strong evidence that the outer case was made by David Dupont. This goldsmith was working in London from the 1730s until his death in the late 1760s and is known to have signed an outer case on a watch which also has an inner case by Stephen Goujon. Edgcumbe's book includes an illustration of a signed example of Dupont's work with the same theme of Time crowning Hope, and he believes it reasonable to think that the two cases were chased by the same hand.Casemaker Goujon (the name suggests a possible Huguenot connection) was registered on 8th April 1720 at Porter Street, Corner of Newport Alley.

The reference in Britten's Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers, 9th edition, lists an 'H. Betterton of London' and cites the source of a watch in the Guildhall Museum, London. Sadly, there appears to be no reference to a Betterton watch being there now.The case is probably the work of Daniel Aveline (1723 - 1771), a Huguenot casemaker with workshops in Seven Dials, Covent Garden, London. He was apprenticed in the Clockmakers' Company to Stephen Goujon (see lot 290) in 1723 and became a Freeman in 1731.The depiction on the outer case may be that of Bacchus and Ariadne. Richard Edgcumbe in The Art of the Gold Chaser shows a similar scene designed by Augustin Heckel dating from circa 1730. Although not identical, it shows a man departing and pointing to a ship in the background, with a woman looking on.(With grateful thanks to Helen Chapman and her team at the Antiquarian Horological Society for their assistance in the cataloguing of this lot)Case - Outer case - opens and closes satisfactorily and the hinge does not appear strained. Clémence became the new company's chairman, and the firm supplied a variety of different watches and timers to the military, particularly the Admiralty, from their offices in 30 Ely Place, London. The Ordnance Q.F. (quick firing) 13-pounder field gun was the standard equipment of the British Royal Horse Artillery since the outbreak of World War I. The original mark I was wire wound, with the later mark II version barrels having a tapered inner A tube pressed into the outer tube. As its maximum range was around 6000 yards, the dial calibration for distance on this example stops at 6500.Although long obsolete as a military weapon, 13 pounders are still in use today by the King's troop RHA, primarily for ceremonial duties and as saluting guns.
