A Rare Pair Of 32-Bore Flintlock Silver-Mounted PistolsBy Twigg, London, London Silver Hallmarks For 1770, Maker's Mark Of Joseph KeaysWith two-stage sighted barrels (old surface pitting) each polygonal and slightly flared towards the muzzle, turned at the girdle and signed along the top flat of the octagonal breech (engraving refreshed), a band of beadwork engraved at the rear, border engraved tangs each decorated with flower-head and foliage, detented flat bevelled locks each retained by two side-nails (two replaced) and with moulded border, second form of signature, stepped tail and characteristic cusp behind the pan, and two linked rollers working on a divided steel spring, the border engraved steels each with pan safety-cover released by a sprung stud, figured full stocks (one with repaired splits at the muzzle and minor repairs around the lock) each carved in relief with a shell behind the barrel tang, border engraved mounts comprising spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap, trigger-guards each with second pattern acorn finial and decorated with a flower-head on the border engraved bow, turned ramrod-pipes, scroll triggers, and horn-tipped ramrods, possibly original, London proof marks and Foreigner's mark (2) 25.3 cm. barrels Footnotes:John Fox Twigg was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1732. With a 67.5cm broad fullered blade with sharpened edge and etched in cyrillic with initials 'ERII' beneath a Crown. With a brass hilt with double shell guard and grip, the 'D' shaped bow stamped to both sides with inspectors marks, a further inspection mark to the blade. 93cm overall. Catherine the Greats reign from 1762-1796 saw numerous conflicts including The Seven Years War, the Pomeranian War against Sweden, wars against the Turks, Circassians, Poles and others. It is also likely that such a sword could also have been used during the Napoleonic Wars. See 'Russian Sidearms, Polearms & Bayonets' by A.N. Kulinsky, 2001. p176, N67. *CR Pitting and degradation to blade in places and very end of point lacking, rubbing and light dents to brass guard and grip.

Lot 54

With a 78.5cm tapering pointed three edged blade with concave sides, with gilt shell guard decorated with a large Napoleonic eagle, with a reeded ebonised grip, slender decorated knuckle bow and finely decorated pommel with Athene's head and Lion mask details. 91.5cm. *CR Some marking and wear to blade, otherwise a nice example.

Lot 55

With a 62cm tapering pointed blade with single fuller, with gilt shell shaped guard decorated with fighting eagles, with slender decorated knuckle bow with a star to the centre, copper wire bound grip and pommel in the form of a classical Roman helmet. 76cm overall. *CR Gilt decoration to handle in good bright condition, some pitting to blade.

Lot 56

With 81.5am straight pointed blade with shallow fuller, the blade decorated with Royal coats of arms, cypher and foliate decoration, with straight cross piece, simple bow guard and shell shaped pommel and later wire bound grip. Possibly altered at some time. With a matched leather and brass scabbard. 99cm overall. *CR Blade worn and engraving worn. alterations to grip and guard.

Lot 72

With a 70cm curved fullered blade with pointed end, the brass hilt with single knuckle bow with cast foliate and Empire style decoration, with a black leather covered grip with wire binding, the oval stepped pommel with conforming cast leaf decoration. 83cm overall. See Russian Sidearms, Polearms & Bayonets by A.N. Kulinsky 2001, p126 No.45 for an example of this sword. *CR blade slightly pitted in places, lacking scabbard and handle slightly loose on blade. Otherwise a nice example.

Lot 74

With an 80cm tapering, pointed blade. with a finely engraved gilt guard, grip and bow, the shaped guard with raised Queen's Crown between crossed foliage, with gold bullion sword knot. The black leather scabbard with conforming engraved gilt metal mounts, 97cm overall. *CR Lower mount detaches, and slight wear to leather by the mounts. Metalwork and blade in very nice condition retaining good original finish.

Lot 99

With an 88cm curved, pointed, single edged and fullered blade, marked to the back 'E&F Horster Waffenfabrik, Solingen'. The black celluloid grip within a shaped stirrup knuckle bow and back strap, the cross piece with forward-facing quillon. One langet with a third Reich eagle and swastika badge (possibly later applied). With blue and silver bullion sword knot. In a black finished scabbard with single ring suspension. 104cm overall. *CR Surface wear throughout, dents and paint loss to scabbard.

Lot 160

An early Tunbridge ware whitewood print and map decorated circular pin cushion, the slightly domed sides divided by purple silk infill with bow suspension, one side with a colour printed map of the coastline from Shoreham to Newhaven centred by Brighthelmston (the name Brighton being adopted in the early 19th Century), the obverse inscribed 'Accept This Little Gift from me and may you ever happy be', within a ball border, 5.2cms dia.
