A George III mahogany chest of drawers, circa 1780, with three long graduated drawers flanked by canted and line inlaid angles and on conforming square tapering legs and spade feet, 89cm high, 109cm wide, 60cm deep Provenance: Oakley House, the Collection of Eustace Gibbs, 3rd Baron Wraxall, KCVO, CMG Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and use, cleaned and repolished, chips, losses and some replacements to veneers, the handles appear to be replacements, one rear leg detached but present with the lot, signs of old glue and previous repairs, the section of moulding to one side also lacking. Upper right hand corner has a shrinkage crack visible to the top and with signs of carcass movement beneath both top corners. A very fine closely matched opposing pair of late 19th century French oval three-drawer chests; kingwood, chequer-strung and gilt-metal-mounted. Each with pierced brass gallery above a marquetry top depicting curtain swags above two central birds, arrows in a quiver, a flaming torch, scrolling foliage and an open book allegorical of the arts. Each with three bow-fronted drawers with floral-style marquetry flanked by stop fluted angles. The sides and backs with similar floral marquetry and above squared cabriole-style legs united by kidney-shaped undertiers with marquetry blocks, quills and open books allegorical of learning. The cabriole legs terminating in gilt-metal sabot (49.5cm wide x 36cm deep x 88cm high)
A very fine mid-19th century English figured credenza: walnut, marquetry and gilt-metal-mounted; the central blind door with scrolling marquetry centre against quarter-veneered boards enclosing shelves; flanked by two bow-fronted glazed doors enclosing further boxwood-strung shelves, the two outset stop fluted Corinthian-style columns terminating in gilt-metal acanthus capitals, raised on plinth base with squat bun feet (153cm wide x 45cm deepest point x 109cm high)Condition Report: The piece has come privately from a large Rectory, the marquetry is good, the gilt metal mounts are a little faded commensurate with age, there are some 'minor' dings and dents to the top and small scratches. There are two areas of polish damage (1-inch each) above the RH bow fronted door on the thumbnail-style moulding. Some scuffing to the lower base commensurate with age. Small darker area (possibly restored) on the LH bow-fronted door. Otherwise a good example of a piece of this age.
A good early 19th century bow-fronted mahogany and satinwood-crossbanded chest; two half-width and three full-width graduated satinwood-crossbanded drawers with stamped brass oval handles (probably original), shaped apron and raised on French-style slightly splaying bracket feet (104cm wide x 53.5cm widest x 88cm high)
