Engraven by John Harris, large engraved map on 8 irregularly sized sheets, large ornamental title cartouche incorporating an image of St. Dunstan pinching the devil's nose with a pair of Goldsmith's tongs, all sheets with platemarks visible and good borders, 2 sheets with one horizontal tear extending c.140mm. in from the platemark (but no loss), a few edges slightly frayed, largest sheet 510 x 610mm., smallest 106 x 160mm., overall approximately 1110 x 1150mm., Joel Gascoyne, 1703Footnotes:RARE MAP OF THE EAST END OF LONDON, ON 8 SEPARATE SHEETS. Drawn up by the surveyor Joel Gascoyne (1650-705), the map extends from Spitalfields to the River Lea, and Bethnal Green to the Isle of Dogs, encompassing the parishes of Limehouse, Poplar, Mile End Old and New Towns, Ratcliff, Wapping, Spitalfields, Bethnal Green, Bromley and Bow. The irregular size of the sheets, in addition to the East End being at this time an unfashionable working area with much of it yet to be built upon (the Isle of Dogs is all but empty), are perhaps reasons the map is scarce. An 18th century South Staffordshire or Bilston enamel heart shaped etui c.1765of tapering heart shape, the body repousse decorated with painted reserves containing putti in an Arcadian landscape, doves, arrow struck double heart, and a crossed bow and arrow quiver, the hinged lid with a bird and fruit on a ledge, raised C-scroll tooled gilt borders against a white ground with scattered floral sprays and bianco-sopra-bianco panels, gilt metal mounts and push button release hinged cover, enclosing a near complete fitted interior with a faceted glass phial, an ivory aide memoire, tweezers and file, gilt metal ear wax scoop, folding ruler and a compassheight 10.5 cm.Condition: Glass phial with small chips round rim and not cap or stopper. Four accessories absent. Hairlines to enamel on rear mainly to rear of lid. Hairlines also present to base and edges of the lid near gilt mounts and interior of lid. Gilt metal mount slightly pushed on base edge. No signs of restoration or losses to enamel.

Movement not tested or guaranteed. appears to be in good condition with no obvious damage to enamel.

Five: Private F. H. Lines, Essex Regiment Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Belfast (5307 Pte. T. [sic] H. Lines, 1: Essex Regt.) minor official correction; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (5307 Pte. H. Lines. Essex Regt.); 1914-15 Star (5307 Pte F. H. Lines. Essex R.); British War and Victory Medals (Pte. F. H. Lines Essex R.) toned, good very fine (5) £240-£280 --- Frank Lines was born in Bow, London, on 11 September 1876 and attested for the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Essex Regiment on 4 October 1898, transferring to the Regular Army on 29 December 1898. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, before transferring to the Reserve on 8 February 1907. Recalled for service during the Great War, Lines served with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front from 12 December 1914, and was wounded by shrapnel to the right shoulder during the second Battle of Ypres on 1 May 1915. Although not recorded on his papers, Lines states in letters among them that he was wounded again in the right hip and thigh on 12 August 1916 at Pozieres, while serving with 9th Battalion. He transferred to the Labour Corps on 23 November 1917, and subsequently to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment on 5 May 1918. He was discharged Class Z on 13 January 1919. He died in Bethnal Green in 1947.

Ellis, 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment British War and Victory Medals (251025 Cpl. A. R. P. Ellis. Essex R.) mounted as worn, good very fine (4) £60-£80 --- Ernest Farrant was born at Castle Hedingham, Essex, in 1891 and attested for the 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment. He served with them during the Great War in Palestine from 23 March 1916, and was subsequently re-numbered 250849. He subsequently transferred to 21st Rifle Brigade on 16 October 1917. He died in Braintree in 1967. Arthur Robert Percy Ellis was born in Bow, London, on 30 July 1883 and attested for the 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment. He served with them during the Great War, and subsequently re-enlisted after the War into the Royal Engineers. He served during the Second World War in the A.R.P. Section of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and died in Chelmsford on 7 September 1958.
