A fabricated bow brooch with square-section transverse arm, three onion-shaped knops with beaded wire collars, scrolled loops to the upper face, rectangular-section bow with beaded wire collar, trapezoidal D-section footplate with notched upper edges; gold hinged pin and catchplate to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Iron Age and Roman Brooches, Oxford, 1985, item 505. 11 grams, 42mm (1 3/4"). From the Maurice Braham and Lord McAlpine collections; formerly in the collection of Henry Mossop, Lincolnshire, UK. This is a rare and unusual example of the highest skill in Roman jewellery making. The catchplate is solid gold; most of the remainder is thick gold sheet beaten over a base metal core, probably bronze. The knobs in particular show numerous tiny hammer marks. This item is accompanied by a positive XRF metal analysis report for the gold from Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Limited. Very fine condition.

Rev: FILETAIROY legend with Athena seated left, resting left elbow on a shield at her side and crowning the late king`s name with a wreath in right hand, transverse spear on her right side, A on Phi beneath Athena`s right arm, stylus in outer left field, bow in upper right field. Not in BMC, Munich, Tübingen, SNG Cop, Mionnet, Weisser, von Fritze, Imhoof, Paris etc. See Wildwinds.com (this coin). 10.63 grams. Attalus II is the only Pergamene king on whose coins one sees a stylus in the left field, but this coin, in bronze and with bust left, is probably unpublished. This coin may have been struck in connection with the Great Altar of Pergamum, dedicated to Zeus and Athena, erected by Eumenes II, the father of Attalus II, to commemorate the city`s victory over the Celts by Attalos I.
