‡A RARE CASED 48-BORE GIRANDONI SYSTEM REPEATING AIR RIFLE FINISHED BY MORTIMER, 21 ST. JAMES'S STREET, LONDON, NO. 490, CIRCA 1815 with octagonal sighted barrel signed in full along the top and rifled with twelve grooves, the breech with characteristic sprung horizontal sliding primer fed by a brass tubular magazine on the right, the latter with hinged iron cover, flat bevelled lock fitted with engraved cocking lever, figured fore-end incised with a linear frame around the rear ramrod-pipe, leather-covered iron butt reservoir of tapering truncated conical form (covering with some damage and losses), border-engraved brass mounts including side-plate decorated with foliage, trigger-guard with a flowerhead on the bow and pineapple finial, rear ramrod-pipe en suite, and fore-end cap, and wooden ramrod: in its original oak case, complete with a spare reservoir numbered en suite, and the case lid with trade label of Mortimer & Son for circa 1811-18 80.3 cm; 31 5/8 in barrel Provenance Dr T. A 20 BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY THOMAS (1) HAWLEY, LONDON, CIRCA 1700 with brass sighted barrel formed in two stages, engraved with foliage and moulded at the median, the breech engraved with a scroll of foliage and struck with London proof marks and the barrelsmith's mark, signed rounded lock engraved with border ornament and strawberry foliage the cock engraved en suite (rubbed), figured walnut full stock, brass mounts including openwork scrolling side-plate, spurred pommel engraved with foliage, trigger-guard with a spray of foliage on the bow and foliate terminal, moulded ramrod-pipe and vacant escutcheon with a grotesque mask top and bottom (later ramrod) 24.2 cm; 9 1/2 in barrel Thomas (1) Hawley produced his proof piece in 1681, became assistant 1697 and Master 1701. He was Gunmaker to Ordnance 1682-1707.
THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN A VERY RARE 60 BORE SEVEN-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK GOOSE RIFLE BY HENRY NOCK, LONDON, GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, CIRCA 1791-3 with browned twist barrels arranged as six around a central seventh, signed in full on the rib and rifled with seven grooves, fitted with silver fore-sight, engraved breech decorated with foliage and with gold-lined vent, engraved case-hardened breech block variously numbered on the face '2917 and '103', engraved tang decorated with foliage inhabited by waterfowl and incorporating a folding back-sight of two leaves set at right angles, stepped bevelled lock signed within a gold-lined oval, fitted with bolt safety-catch, gold-lined pan, and roller (restorations including later cock screw and gold), figured walnut half-stock (the underside cracked and expertly repaired diagonally from the beneath the lock to the rear ramrod-pipe), chequered grip, engraved blued iron mounts comprising trigger-guard decorated with a hound putting up a brace of birds on the bow and with pineapple finial, butt-plate with a further vignette, rear ramrod-pipe en suite with the trigger-guard, a further browned ramrod-pipe (the metal parts expertly refinished), and later brass-tipped ramrod 51.5 cm; 20 ¼ in barrels A similar rifle by this maker made for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in April 1793 is in the Royal Collection at Windsor. Colonel Thomas Thornton, perhaps the most flamboyant sportsman and falconer of the 18th century, author of 'A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England' and 'A Sporting Tour through France' was a notable exponent of Nock's goose rifles. For an account of Nock's seven barrelled naval and also sporting guns see Blackmore 1955, pp. 165-182 The engraving on the mounts is probably by the master engraver William Palmer (1737-1812). His accounts for the years 1791, 1792 and 1793 record 3, 9, and 7 volley guns respectively, decorated by him. See Clancy & Griffin (privately published), p. 18.

A 12 BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN FOR A BOY BY HARRISON, GOODMANSFIELDS, LONDON, CIRCA 1780 with two-stage barrel swelling towards the muzzle and signed over the octagonal breech, struck with the barrelsmith's mark and London proof marks on the left, gold-lined vent, engraved grooved tang, border-engraved bolted lock signed on a scroll, figured walnut half-stock inlaid with silver-wire about the ramrod aperture, behind the lock, with the initials 'WH', probably the maker, behind the tang and with an elaborate trophy-of-arms centring on a wild boar head in place of the side-plate, engraved iron mounts comprising trigger-guard with finial formed as a bouquet and a rococo flower head on the bow, butt-plate with a trophy-of-arms on the tang (the iron parts with areas of wear and pitting), and two moulded silver ramrod-pipes (ramrod missing) 64.2 cm; 25 3/8 in barrel William Harrison is recorded at Rosemary Lane, East Smithfield in 1777 and at Goodman's Yard, Minories in 1779.
