The historically significant nursing awards to Doreen Norton, O.B.E., F.R.C.N. (1922-2007): The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Lady Officer's shoulder badge, 2nd type, on its bow ribbon and in case of issue; Royal College of Nursing Fellow's badge, silver gilt and enamels, reverse inscribed '5 D. NORTON 24.11.1976', Thomas Fattorini, Birmingham 976, cased; both extremely fine. [2] Doreen Norton's long and distinguished career encompassed a contribution to modern nursing that was nothing short of revolutionary. Her pioneering work in the prevention of pressure sores, commonly known as bed sores, terminated a long and benighted period of ineffective treatments by promoting techniques that, though not unknown before her time, have become common practice in large part thanks to her efforts. In recognition of this she was made one of the first fellows of the R.C.N. in 1976, and created O.B.E. the following year.
