Simpson, finished in pale grey over light blue-grey below the water line, with conning tower, periscopes, forward and rear deck armament, twin folding funnels, upper deck armament, guard rails, cleats and other fittings, all gold plated, with twin radio masts forward and aft stabiliser planes, the bow torpedo doors and twin three-blade propellers gold plated, on stand in oak framed display case, 64in (162.5cm) long, with fore and aft simulated ivory builders plates, inscribed `H.M. Submarine `K3` High Speed Fleet Submarine `K` Class for the British Admiralty Constructed By Messrs Vickers Barrow in Furness, Launched May 1916` The `K` Class submarines were designed and built on the orders of the Admiralty as rumour was rife that the Kaisermarine had developed a high surface speed U-boat. Ultimately, driven by geared turbines of 10,500 h.p., the `K` class, with a crew of five officers and fifty-three ratings, this submarine had at the time (1916) a surface speed of 25 knots and was the world`s fastest. Known as the `Kalamity Kays` the eighteen `K` class built had unhappy lives. Accidents, technical malfunctions and incompetence led to the class becoming rapidly extinct. `K3``s most momentus moment was when, with HRH The Price of Wales abroad, she suddenly and uncontrollably dived, becoming stuck on the sea bed. After much anguish and 20 minutes she was freed and returned to the surface. The Prince was unharmed, but no doubt shaken by the experience. After many other `adventures`, `K3` was eventually scrapped in 1921. (1)

"AN IMPORTANT RUSSIAN MINIATURE OF A VIOLINIST, POSSIBLY THE YOUNG MIKHAIL GLINKA, SIGNED I. GERIN AND DATED 1835. A finely executed watercolor on an ivory oval depicting a waist-up portrait of a well adorned seated young gentleman holding a violin bow and with sheet music on a stand before him. Signed in Cyrillic at mid right "?. ??????" (I. Zheren) and dated 1835. Verso with finely penned indigenous dedicatory inscription written in Russian, "To my dearest friend Sofia Nikolayevna Treskina with the fondest of memories, 31st of August 1835". Height 3.1 inches (8 cm). At present the lack of more extensive and clear biographical data provides limited insight into the life of the obviously well-connected and highly skilled miniaturist portrait painter who signed his works ?. ??????. It would seem that Ivan Gerin was likely the son of a French born artist by the name of Michel Gerin. Some sources indicate he was already doing portraiture work in the 1780’s. However it is known that in 1808, Ivan Gerin received the rank of Associate in miniature painting from the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy, and in the following year the rank of Academician in miniature and nature painting.Known works by Ivan Gerin reflect his status amongst the social elite as having been a sought out miniaturist portrait painter of the day. Included among his known clientele were Empress Maria Fedorovna, General-Field-Marshal S. F. Apraksin, Major-General M. E. Khrapovitski, actress N. A. Samoilova, and the famous Russian poet Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol. It is believed that Gerin had two sons, Ivan and Nikolai who followed in their father’s footsteps and were in their own right also accomplished artists. Besides the Hermitage, works by Gerin are held in the collections of the St. Petersburg State Russian Museum and other important museums of Russia. One can only speculate as to the recipient of this portrait miniature who is addressed on the inscription found on the reverse as Sofia Nikolayevna Treskina. Perhaps the daughter of Nikolai Ivanovich Treskin (1763-1842), the controversial Civil Governor of Irkustk who is known to have fathered eight children including two daughters."
