Attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (Italian, 1753-1836): A fine circular micromosaic plaque depicting an allegory of the temple of loveRoman, late 18th/early 19th centuryinlaid with polychrome tesserae to depict a flaming athenienne, between a bow and quiver of arrows, the central incense burner aflame with the fires of love and desire, between a ribbon tied bow and a quiver as the attributes of Cupid, against a blue ground within a red and white tesserae border, the plaque probably originally set into the lid of a snuff box or bonbonniere, 6.7cm diameterFootnotes:Giacomo Rafaelli was trained as a painter and sculptor from an early age, becoming a master in Florentine hardstone mosaics and Roman micromosaics. His family had supplied the Vatican Mosaic Workshop with smalti, the material used for micromosaics. In 1775 he gave the first exhibition which led to a brilliant career in which he produced a vast number and variety of works, ranging from mosaic floors, tables, and monumental clocks to miniature mosaics small enough to fit on a snuffbox or brooch. One of his earliest known examples is a small round plaque, signed and dated 1779, depicting 'The Doves of Pliny' (now at the British Museum).A similarly themed circular plaque is in the permanent collection of The Victoria & Albert Museum (acc. no. Attributed to Luigi Valadier (Italian, 1726-1785): A marble, porphyry and bronze mounted model of the Rostral columnthe columnar shaft, with applied ribbon tied laurel wreaths, on stepped pedestal above a verdi antico and porphyry square plinth base, (the column lacking its side mounts), 77.5cm high overallFootnotes:Andrea and Luigi Valadier were the foremost goldsmiths and bronze workers in Rome, completing commissions for the Pope as well as numerous cardinals and others associated with the Church. Luigi was the son of Andrea and became a Master Goldsmith in 1760. Counting amongst his prestigious clients Pope Pius VI, who visited Valadier's workshop four times, and the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, Karl IV, and Elector Palatine, he also received commissions from churches throughout the world including Mexico, Spain and Austria as well as well as throughout his native Italy.Luigi had an impressive ability to reframe examples of ancient Roman art and architecture and antique sculptures, cameos, architectural details, and ruins of ancient monuments also served as inspiration for his own works which included candelabra, tableware, altars and centrepieces in both silver, bronze, marbles and semi-precious stones. Uncommonly for the time he produced works of all sizes from large altar pieces to intricate pieces of small jewellery.Despite his distinguished clientele and acclaim, Luigi committed suicide by drowning himself in the Tiber in 1785, probably because of heavy debts to his creditors due to non-payment of invoices by his clients. On his death, his business passed to his son Giuseppe.A rostral column is a type of victory column originating in ancient Greece and Rome, where they were erected to commemorate a naval military victory. Its defining characteristic is the integrated prows or rams of ships, representing captured or destroyed enemy ships. The name derives from the Latin rostrum meaning the bow of a naval vessel. For comparable Rostral columns by Valadier, see the following publications: Le dossiers du musee du Louvre, Luigi Valadier au Louvre ou l'Antique exaltee, Reuion des Musees Nationaux, 1995, p21. fig 1 & 2Alvar Gonzalez Palacios, Luigi Valadier., The Frick Collection, 2018, p171. fig 4_43.Denise Ledoux-Lebard, Le Grand Trianon: Meubles et objets d'art (Inventaire Général du Musée national de Versailles et des Trianon), p. 46-7, Inv. Bible, English. The Most Sacred Bible, Whiche is the holy scripture, conteyning the old and new testament, translated...by Rychard Taverner, printed in black letter, preliminaries single column, text double column, lacking 2 preliminary ff. and blank leaf 3N4 at end of OT, otherwise complete, titles within woodcut architectural borders, OT trimmed to edge of border, mounted on 19th century paper with some surface abrasion causing slight loss, and loose, woodcut initials, several preliminary leaves badly torn, frayed and creased, first c.60 leaves and a few at end with 19th century guards/repairs to inner margins and sometimes elsewhere with some loss to side-notes, other tears to various leaves throughout, some leaves, especially near beginning trimmed at upper edge affecting headline, some staining, particularly at beginning and end, a few early ink annotations, mostly to verso of final leaf with some partially obscured by later paper repair, signature A (first 6 leaves of Genesis misbound after signature B, NT without signature K as in all known copies, 19th century vellum, gilt, black leather spine labels lettered in gilt, one slightly chipped, a little soiled and stained, front cover starting to bow, [Herbert 45], folio (271 x 190mm.), Prynted...by John Bydell, for Thomas Barthlet, 1539.⁂ An almost complete copy of the first edition of Taverner's Bible, a revision of Matthew's Bible of 1537. Despite the poor condition of the preliminary leaves, they are probably for the most part reparable and the vast majority of the text is in generally good condition."Richard Taverner (1505?-1575), the author of this revision, was born in Brisley in Norfolk about 1505. He was a scholar of both Cambridge and Oxford and received his Master's degree of Cambridge in 1530. He had high repute for his Greek scholarship, and was at this time Clerk of the King's Signets, and in the employ of Thomas Cromwell. He lost his position under Queen Mary but under Queen Elizabeth I was appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire. In his corrections of the text, Taverner aims at compression and vividness. He substitutes in many places a Saxon for a Latin word, as spokesman for advocate; and does not hesitate to coin words, as mercystock (1 John i.2). Many marginal notes are omitted, and some new comments added. Taverner's work exercised practically no influence on later revisions (Westcott, History, p. 219), although he introduced parable, passover and a few other terms still in use. There are many peculiarities in the spelling - e.g. peax for peace, hable for able, etc." (Herbert).Only four copies have appeared at auction since 1988 and all have been substantially less complete than this.
