A fine double barrelled 22 bore percussion sporting gun, by Joseph Manton, number 5540, 42½” overall, well rebrowned twist barrels 26”, top rib engraved “Joseph Manton’s Patent Elevation”, locks finely engraved with borders, scrolls and game dogs, and “Joseph Manton London”, the nicely figured polished walnut fullstock with chequered fore-end and pistol grip, and with engraved steel mounts including trigger guard with pineapple finial, bow engraved with game dogs and with serial number 3616; ebony ramrod with German silver tip and brass worm cover. Good Working Order and generally quite Crisp Condtion, the trigger guard retaining traces of the original blued finish. See “The Manton Supplement” by Neal & Back page 237 for reference to this gun, where it states that it has been converted from flintlock by the maker with new stock, locks and breeches. Plate 46
A double barrelled 30 bore Lancaster oval bore percussion sporting rifle, by Charles Lancaster, number 2498 (c 1852), 46” overall, damascus barrels 30”, with 3 folding leaf rearsights, the undersides engraved “Charles Lancaster 151 New Bond Street, London”, “Charles Lancaster’s Patent”, and with serial number and initials “C.L”; bolted locks scroll engraved overall and with “C Lancaster London” in scrolled panels; finely figured walnut stock with cheekpiece, deeply chequered fore-end and wrist and engraved steel mounts including circular patch box engraved with stag’s head and “Killed Septr. 29th 1852 At Glen Strathfarer by E.D”. Good Working Order and Condition (the metalwork well refinished and re-engraved overall, apart from the trigger guard bow which has a naive depiction of two stags fighting, no ramrod) Plate 46
A fine German 90 bore percussion hunting rifle, by Gebr Rempt in Suhl, 47½” overall, octagonal barrel 31½” with recessed muzzle, chiselled breech, sliding adjustable rearsight and gold inlaid “Gebr.=Rempt in Suhl”, breech tang engraved, gold inlaid with deer, and with large adjustable aperture rearsight; lock and hammer chiselled with vine leaves, plate engraved with forest scene and gold inlaid with a stag; walnut halfstock with cheek rest and chequered wrist and with engraved steel mounts including large double scrolled trigger guard, bow gold inlaid with stag and containing double set triggers, large patch box decorated with vines and vignette of two gold inlaid deer amid rocky landscape, butt plate and fore-end cap; with single sling swivel in the butt and slender steel ramrod. Good Working Order and Clean Condition (lower ramrod pipe and sling swivel missing). Stockel lists Gebr Rempt working in Suhl from 1865 to 1940. Plate 56
A cased double barrelled 10 bore percussion sporting gun by Westley Richards, number 2048, 48½” overall, lightly etched twist barrels 32”, top rib engraved “Westley Richards, 170 New Bond St, London”, otherwise plain locks engraved “Westley Richards”; walnut halfstock with plain fore-end, chequered wrist and plain steel mounts apart from scroll engraved trigger guard bow; with its original brass mounted ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition, showing signs of use but otherwise a good untouched piece; in its original green baize lined fitted oak case, with trade label of “Westley Richards Gun Manufacturers to His Royal Highness Prince Albert 170 New Bond Street, London”, containing a heavy duty cleaning rod and a few later accessories, (brass lid and keyhole escutcheons missing). IMPRESSIVE SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND NECKLACE the large pendeloque cut sapphire of approximately 3.00 carats with four brilliant cut diamonds below, suspended from a row of brilliant cut diamonds, in turn suspended from a brilliant cut diamond set bow, the diamonds totalling approximately 1.19 carats, in eighteen carat white gold, 30x18mm, on an eighteen carat white gold chain, 48cm long No damage. General wear.
