Officer's sword or spadroon, 82.5cm blade engraved I = WOOLEY = BIRM'M on the back edge, characteristic polished steel hilt with D-shaped knuckle bow and looping sideguard, the latter pierced with scrolling foliage and chiselled to the edge, castellated pommel with faceted tang button, tapering reeded ivory grip with steel straps to either side, the outer strap engraved DM in script.

A scarce antique Inuit or Yupik, walrus, or other Cetacean ivory two piece harpoon with detachable head and iron tip, the tapering shaft pierced with cylindrical holes originally to attach shaft and head by a walrus or sealskin thong, 46 cm long overall, 19th Century or perhaps earlierProvenance: The Property of a Gentleman. Notably, the Inuit, Yupik and Inupiaq Peoples are thought to have hunted bow head whales and other mammals for hundreds of years across the regions of the Arctic. This vast area, incorporating Alaska, the Bering Sea, Greenland, Baffin Island and the far eastern limits of Russia, has produced different styles and sizes of harpoon, but compare for example two similar from the collection of Glenbow Museum, Calgary in Canada (Nos. AB 406 and AB 407).
