[FRENCH REVOLUTION INTEREST] Attributed to Siccardi, after Jean-Jacques Hauer (French/German 1751-1829) Portrait of Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d`Armont (1768-1793) a.k.a Charlotte Corday Small half length, in a brown dress and tall hat with brown bow, holding a dagger in her right hand, 20x 18cm, housed in a 19th Century gilt brass easel frame, titled to the mount `Gouache de Charlotte Corday B.1768-D.1793`, the glazed reverse holding a letter of provenance by Pilotelle dated 21st April 1904 Provenance: M. Charles Renard, 22 Impasse de Than, Caen George Raoul Eugene Pilotelle (1845-1918) a.k.a `Pilotell`- Geoffrey Hales Jennings (1905-1992) Notes: The original portrait, on which the present work is based, is known to have been sketched by Jean Jacques Haeur whilst Corday was imprisoned awaiting execution. The letter of provenance to the glazed reverse of the frame explains how Corday also requested that Haeur produced a small copy of his portrait to send to her family. It also refers to the biographical work on Corday by Pierre Theodore Cheron de Villiers, published 1865, in which is mentioned the present work. Villiers states the work by Siccardi a near exact copy of Hauers portrait, and found in the collection of `M. Ch. Renard`. This and a handful of other works are mentioned on p.434 by Villiers, with which he ends `Ce sont la des portraits authentiques de Mlle de Corday`. Georges Pilotelle, a.k.a Pilotell, was a French satirical cartoonist who was ironically himself sentenced to death in 1874 whilst in exile, in England, where he spent the remainder of his life.
