An early 19th Century mahogany bow front chest of drawers With a reeded top above two short and two long cock beaded drawers, replaced oval escutcheons and handles above a shaped apron raised upon splay feet, 90 x 83 x 47cm CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2249 - The bowfront top some ink staining, minor water staining, surface scratching, reeded border in good condition, each oval brass handle replaced, pieces of veneer replaced in between left and right short drawer measures approx. 7x2cms, and 5x2cms, pieces of veneer missing on the crossbanded frieze beneath the two short drawers measures approx. 4x2cms, minor scratching to cockbeading, cockbeading beneath the 1st long drawer requires re-gluing and fixing, one lock plate loose, drawer linings good condition each side - right hand side shrinkage crack running approx. 50cms raised to finger touch but not seriously divided and a shrinkage crack in front measures approx. 50cms in length. Pine back good condition

A VIRABHADRA SHRINE Western Deccan, India, circa 18th century cast brass in five sections, the central figure of Virabhadra holding sword, shield, bow and trident, flanked by the goat headed Daksha and his daughter Sati, the elaborate aureole behind with makaratorana surmounted by a kirtimukha 31.5cm high Provenance Formerly in the collection of the late Peter Cochrane, inv.JPC 67/38 Daksha offended Siva by not inviting him to attend a sacrifice following an earlier occasion when Siva had slighted him. Sati who was Daksha's daughter as well as being Siva s wife was present and felt so insulted that she threw herself on the pyre. Then Siva appeared as Virabhadra and cut off Daksha s head to avenge his wife. Other gods pleaded for Daksha's life but although Siva decided to spare him, his severed head could not be found so the head of a goat was substituted instead. Daksha is depicted with hands in namaskara mudra humbly paying respects. Condition: General wear

A George III marquetry work table , circa 1760 and later , in the manner of Pierre Langlois , the serpentine shaped hinged top inlaid with with a wreath and bow motif opening to a fitted teapoy interior above conforming frieze, and cabriole supports united by a breakfront undertier, the whole on brass caps and castors, 66cm high, 51cm wide, 39cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Oxfordshire The design of this work table reflects the French fashion promoted from the 1750s by the Tottenham Court Road ebeniste or cabinet-maker Pierre Langlois (d. 1767). The bold use of swags of marquetry bellflowers alongside exotic timbers also demonstrates similarities to the work of John Cobb. Thomas Chippendale supplied a related table, veneered in tulip and rose woods, for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and invoiced it in 1766 as: A Lady s commode writing table made of tulip and rosewood with a slider cover d with Green Cloth 5.14.0 (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale London, 1978, fig.436).
