A NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER ANN SHAW 1809 worked in silk on linen with a basket of flowers, further flowers including a rose and fuchsias, blue bow, the initials of the royal family beneath crowns or coronets and verse in trailing border, 36.5 x 31cm ++An attractive relatively fine example in good unrestored condition with no obvious moth holes or darned repairs, light fading but the pigments still reasonably well preserved, no colour run observed, long undisturbed in the present old probably 19th c gilt frame
A SCOTTISH VICTORIAN WINDSOR CHAIR, AYRSHIRE, DARVEL OR NEWMILNS, SECOND HALF 19TH C of American birch with ash lap jointed bow and comb rail, retaining much of the original red stain, 110cm h With its distinctive appearance, including a sharply raked back when viewed in profile, production of such chairs seems to have been limited to the small lowland towns of Darvel and Newmilns. Turned chairs are rare in Scottish vernacular furniture where the tradition for joined, primitive fireside chairs and seats predominated until a surprisingly late period. A closely similar chair is illustrated Cotton (B D), Scottish Vernacular Furniture 2008, fig 362. ++An excellent example in fine original condition. Encrusted with dirt and grime
