A pair of 19th Century giltwood looking glasses having central bow fronted shelves flanked by fluted columns headed with acanthus motifs to the capitals below a pediment with scrolling foliage etc., (damages, losses, old repairs and condition generally commensurate with age), 120cm (highest) x 73cm (widest)
A Herend porcelain trinket box and cover modelled as a bunch of asparagus tied with a bow, together with one other similar sized trinket dish and cover (not marked but in a Herend design) (2) CONDITION REPORT: The box and cover modelled as asparagus - the underside of the base is quite dirty where it has been placed on a table. The underside has no real problems with no chips, cracks or restoration noted. The lid with the pink bow appears to be in good general overall original condition with no evidence of damage or restoration. The green leaf shaped box and cover - the lower section appears to be in generally good order with no hairlines, chips or restoration noted, although there is a small residue of old sellotape to the underside. The green leaf shaped leaf has two small approx. 1cm sized surplus of glaze residues to the underside of the lid which are original. Being super critical the gilding on the handle is slightly worn at the ends but both boxes and covers appear in generally good honest original condition with no problems noted.
THESE CABINETS HAVE BEEN ADAPTED FROM ANOTHER PIECE OF FURNITURE AND IN THE AUCTIONEER'S VIEW, SOMETIME IN THE LATE 20TH CENTURY An opposing pair of 19th century figured walnut bow-fronted side cabinets; the doors opening to reveal slides, 40cm wide CONDITION REPORT: We are now sure that these cabinets have been converted from one original piece of furniture and they were not made like this. When you turn the cabinets up on the underside there is a hole where a castor used to be and when the cabinet doors are opened it is apparent that the top bow fronted section has been applied to the rest of the piece quite recently, even though the walnut veneer on the top may have originally been produced some time in the early 20th Century. There are some minor scratches and scuffs etc., as you would expect and the polish has dried out and is now producing a horizontal line effect on the tops of the cabinets in the same way that you might see polish degrading on 1930's walnut dressing table suites. Height 62cm x Depth 42.5cm at the deepest point on the top. These are now sold as seen as a pair of bow fronted walnut cabinets and even though the “bones” are 19th Century the cabinets are not “original)
A George III period bow-fronted mahogany and boxwood-strung sideboard of small proportions; single full-width drawer above kneehole space and two further drawers flanking, raised on square tapering boxwood-strung legs, 105cm wide CONDITION REPORT: There looks to be a series of four screw head sized ring marks to the front at the top about 3/4cm in from the bow fronted crossbanding. There is also several scratches and ring/water marks commensurate with age and the same four screw head sized circular marks 3/4cm in from the back of the piece. There is a split to the right hand side emanating from the front leg going back approx. 10cm. The left hand side also has a split which looks like it's been repaired historically. The back looks like it has had replacement wooden pieces of wood at the back and bottom, I say “new” as you can see where the new nails are but the wood itself is old. The top drawer when it is opened has a split along the left hand side of the darkened pine drawer lining and there is damage to the rear of the drawer front. Two lower drawers appear in good order and there is scuffing, marks, indentations mostly towards the bottom of the legs as you would expect commensurate with age. There are minor small pieces of veneers away.

Eardley Norton was thought to have been born into a farming family from Rigsby, Lincolnshire, however he was apprenticed as a clockmaker 25 May 1743 to Robert Dawson of Alford. Latterly he moved to London where he is listed as working at 49 St. John’s Street, Clerkenwell between 1760 and 1794. He was member of the Clockmakers’ Company being freed in 1770 and remained a member until his death in 1792. He applied for a patent for a new type of striking mechanism for both clocks and watches on 31 August 1771. Norton enjoyed Royal patronage being perhaps best known for his silver mounted four-dial astronomical clock (made in collaboration with James Ferguson F.R.S.) commissioned by George III for Buckingham House (later Palace) which still remains in the Royal Collection (RCIN 30432). He married Mary Swinnerton of Oswestry and later retired to Stonegrove House (no longer existing), Little Stanmore, Middlesex, in the parish of Whitchurch. On his death, his business was taken over by the partnership of Gravell and Tolkien. He is buried at St. Lawrence's church in Little Stanmore. The current lot has noticeably thick plates, very generous heavy pillars and utilises an unusual form of deadbeat escapement configured with teeth set at ninety degrees to then rim.
