Rylands.), 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, War Medal, extremely fine, presented in a frame with accompanying commemorative condolence scroll inscribed to the recipient, 45 x 35cm, plus transmission slips for WWI & WWII medals and Certificate of Exemption Military Acts, 1916 inscribed to the recipient and a large collection of copied service papers and research (Qty: 5)NOTESSamuel Horace Rylands (1892-1940), was a native of Hunset, Leeds and at the age of 16 became an apprentice to J.M. Lennard & Sons Shipping Company and stayed with the firm until 1912. After completing his apprenticeship he served as an able seaman for 6 months in the cargo ship SS. Caroline . In 1914 he qualified as a deck officer and joined SS Corinthic remaining on this ship until 1915 when he joined SS Huntstrick . His last ship during WWI was SS Ilderton which he joined in 1917. In 1936 joined the SS Pacific President as 2nd Officer and on Thursday 28 November 1940 convoy OB251 sailed from Liverpool with 33 merchant ships plus 4 escorts which included SS Pacific President , at 0900 hours on 2 December 1940 the Pacific President was hit by 2 torpedoes from U-43 and sank quickly by the bow, there were no survivors from her 52 crew. Rylands is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

EDWARDIAN MAHOGANY BOW FRONT MIRROR BACK SIDEBOARD ornately carved with flowers and foliage, having three bevelled shaped mirrors flanked by two glazed display cabinets, the interior revealing fitted velvet lined shelves with bow front glazed doors and fitted shelves standing on shaped cabriole legs. 134 x 56 x 220cm approx.(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: One of the vertical supports is rather loose. Most of the carving appears complete. General wear, marks and scratches as commensurate with age. No noticeable damage to any of the glazed panels. Useable condition overall. There are some vertical splits in places to the doors.

VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Overall appearing in reasonably good condition for age. There is some fading in places, usual wear and scuffs commensurate with age. Good usable condition. Back appears original. Closed split in one side.
