An Early 20th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the pearl white, and gilded with flowers. The cream silk leaf is backed with fine cream gauze, and painted with a central scene of a courting couple and another young lady, in Regency dress with high waist and puffed sleeves, the gentleman in tailcoat and bicorn hat. The reserves are painted with flowers in pastel pinks and blues, matching the dresses, with the addition of minute multi coloured sequins and a fairly stylised painted border. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Together with three other fans in various states of disrepair, comprising a mid-19th century bone fan with wide fretted sticks, the double paper leaf lithographed and hand coloured, showing a group of young ladies gathering flowers for garlands, two young men hiding behind bushes, seemingly holding hand mirrors, willing the many winged cherubs and Cupid, ready with his bow and arrow, to favour them. The verso shows a scene of wealthier Society at leisure, the ladies in silk gowns and lace, their suitors in capes and ruffs. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm: a white Mother of Pearl fan, gilded with a simple design, the double paper leaf lithographed and hand coloured and showing a well-dressed family group with children and a dog, at leisure in the outdoors, the verso another scene of young ladies wearing perhaps regional European costume relaxing with mountains in the background. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm; finally, an early 20th century bone fan, simply clouté with silver metal, the cream gauze leaf embroidered throughout with silver sequins in band of various depths and design. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm (4) CONDITION REPORT: . The first fan is in good clean order save for some light discoloration/spots and some splitting to the backing gauze. The second fan has a broken frame and some sections are missing, the leaf is slightly damaged in the centre and the very top gold edging has some loss. The third fan has extensive damage to the monture. Some leaf folds are splitting but not seriously. The final fan has damage to the gauze but the monture would possibly be useful for a lace maker.

Sadly for Emma and Horatia, the government would offer no support and Emma would run up truly huge debts after Nelson's death. Eventually, she ended up in prison for debt and died shortly afterwards. The pigtail at Greenwich shows his sandy-coloured hair, bound with black ribbon, which is tied in a bow. Surgeon William Beatty records in his 'Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson' that Nelson asked that Lady Hamilton should have his hair.Small locks of hair were given to relations and close friends, and some pieces were mounted in special mourning rings and lockets.West Milton referred to on the hand-written note is a village located in West Dorset relatively close to the Hardy family estate in Portersham. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual.
