He was granted various patents relating to firearms and was responsible for inventions including whaling guns, Davy lamps, a self-righting life-boat, level crossing-gates, and an electric-light system. He received awards for guns and barrels 'perfectly forged and polished' at the Great Exhibition of 1853 and the Paris Exhibition of 1855.
