An outstanding 18c French try plane 29" x 2 3/8" x 8 1/2"h. carved from one piece of evergreen oak, the front tote beautifully carved as a cascading wave, the handle carved to form the head of a sea serpent and with cupids bow carving at the escapement, an old nailed repair at the tote and some hammer damage at the toe does not detract from this wonderful early plane, the date 1780 behind the iron is a later addition (the plane is probably earlier) an important piece with a mellow patina (see Russell fig 301 for details and illustrations) G+
