A set of twelve Chinese sancai tileworks figures of warriors, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the biscuit and partially glazed warriors modelled as foot soldiers wearing armored tunics partly enamelled in green and ochre on canted square bases, two holding circular shields, two holding beaters, five holding spears, one holding a bow, one holding a sword, the last holding a pair of musical percussion shakers, their unglazed detachable heads modelled with plumed helmets, some with traces of red staining Typical of the smaller funerary style figures produced during the later Ming dynasty, these pieces can be compared to the earlier more elaborate and expensive life size ‘Terracotta Amy’ statues dating from 210BC which were discovered in the Lintong district, Xi’an, Shaanxi province near the mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. It is however today unclear whether these later more modest figures were made specifically for traditional burial purposes or if they were in fact produced more for their obvious decorative appeal. 24cm high In good condition commensurate with age, with no apparent major damage, some figures with very minute minor chipping to the extremities and the bases.
