Aegidius Sadeler II (1570-1629) - Matthias Emperor - 1614 Impressive elaborate large Portrait of Emperor Matthias, bust to right on a pedestal, surrounded by a garland containing ten medallions with portraits of Emperors, including Rudolph II and Maximillian II. The Allegorical Portrait of the Hapsburg Emperor Matthias is a large, extravagant composition, full of political iconography and playful illusionism. The naturalistic likeness of Matthias is set upon a fictive sculpted bust with draped shoulders and pedestal. The composition is embedded with personifications, beginning with two figures representing Wisdom and Fortitude who carry flags with the emperor's emblems at the upper corners. At top center, cherubs carry the imperial crown down from heaven, while the Three Graces shower flowers and gold upon the emperor. At the sides, figures of Mercury and Minerva, posed like the famed statues of the Dioscuri in Rome, tame Pegasus (a common symbol of Virtue) and spear the dragon of Religious Heresy. Below, the diverse subjects of the empire and its Turkish foes kneel in homage. 56,40 x 40,00 cm A good but trimmed impression with lower part with tablet and text line cut of. Mounted on a support sheet and framed. Minory defects but mainly very good. Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (310) Engraving 1614 1500
Cornelis Galle (1576-1650) - Portrait of Carolus Quintus after Titian Portrait of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). Charles was the eldest son of Philip the Handsome and Joan of Castile, who would enter history as Joan the Mad. The countries he ruled, the Spanish Empire, together formed the largest European empire since that of Charlemagne. In fact, his entire empire, so including the American and Asian territories, was even larger than the earlier Roman Empire and it can rightly be called one of the first world empires of the New Age. In this bust portrait, he is shown in profile. The light reflects on his shining armor. We also recognize the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The Subscript "En fulminanti similis inuic ta Herculis, Ultra labores arma sic Carolis tulit" links to the motto of arms 'Plus Ultra' chosen by Emperor Charles V. It was a variation on 'Non plus ultra', the text Hercules is said to have chiselled on the Pillars of Hercules on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar to mark the end of the world in classical antiquity. Under Charles's reign, Spain experienced tremendous colonial expansion and with the new motto, he wanted to indicate that the Strait of Gibraltar was no longer the end of the world and that Spain's ambitions extended further. 22,00 x 17,00 cm Excellent condition, nice dark sharp print, clearly defined plate edges. With full plate border and wide margins in the full sheet of watermarked laid paper (Weapon of Amsterdam) Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (133) Engraving 1630-1650 220

EUR 29,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A bronze figure of Lokeshvara, 13th century Expert remark: Note the similar position of the arms and various implements he holds. Note the size (26.3 cm) and the fact that while this is an entire figure, the present lot - if the entire figure had been preserved - would have roughly double the size of this comparison.Update 25.9.2023: A noted expert and colleague has informed us that there is a possibility that the present lot is pre-angkorian and should be dated accordingly e.g. 8th-9th century. Specifically the hair locks show some iconographical simliarity to certain sandstone figures from phnom da.

An exceptionally rare Chelsea model of a child's head, circa 1750After 'Il Fiammingo', the young boy turning to his left and gazing downwards, his lips slightly parted, left in the white, 12cm high excluding standFootnotes:ProvenanceSotheby's, 10 July 1962, lot 67Brian Haughton Antiques, Splendour of a Golden Age (2004), no.7Mavis Bimson CollectionThe sensitive modelling on this important piece of early English porcelain is accentuated by the recent change in the porcelain paste at Chelsea, the thicker body more suited to sculpture. F Severne Mackenna notes that the raised anchor period body and glaze 'combine to produce an effect of voluptuousness', not achieved in the earlier incised triangle period, see Chelsea Porcelain: The Triangle and Raised Anchor Wares (1948), p.32. Only a handful of these rare and wonderful models are known. One from the Zorka Hodgson Collection was sold by Bonhams on 10 September 2008, lot 9. Zorka Hodgson researched the origins of the bust in her paper, 'Chelsea Boy's Head after Francois Duquesnoy-Il Fiammingo', ECC Trans, Vol.15, Pt.2 (1994), p.184-89.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Seddon records just seven goblets inscribed with the motto 'Redeat' (May he return) at the time of writing, which usually appears on the bowl of the glass, all of which are attributed to the same engraver. The motto first appeared on a Jacobite medal with a bust of Prince Charles which was struck in 1752 for the Oak Society and it is possible the some of the glasses inscribed 'Redeat' are connected with this Jacobite club, see Seddon 91995), p.107.
