Iran, Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, a set of 31 gold commemorative medals struck to 100g, 50g and 25g weights, all stamped with marks denoting .900 fineness, extremely fine to virtually mint state, some of the larger medals with some friction and handling marks This handsome set of 31 medals, housed in a specially-made fitted case, was presented to a member of the vendor’s family by the Shah during the 1970s, reportedly one of only three such sets assembled. The original presentation case was damaged beyond repair, and the set is offered with a recent, custom-made replacement. The medals comprise the following: Struck at 100g weight (5): i) Twelve Laws of the White Revolution, gold medal (100.06g), SH 1341 (AD 1962), Muhammad Reza Shah standing on globe with clouds behind, right hand aloft, rev., twelve figures representing the Twelve Laws arranged radially with scroll at centre, three medallions below ii) 2,500th Anniversary of the Persian Empire, gold medal (99.61g), undated, jugate busts of Muhammad Reza Shah and Cyrus the Great to left, rev., cylindrical clay tablet within elaborate border, Iranian arms above;; Paul I (1796-1801), Coronation,late novodel gold medal, by C. Alexander I (1801-1825), gold medal, 1814, by Thomas Wyon, struck to commemorate the visit to England of Alexander I and his sister, Catherine, Duchess of Oldenburg, alexander russiarum imperator, laureate bust right, rev., ob. advent. m.d. catharinae. hosp. gratissimae, Britannia seated left holding trident and olive-branch, shield bearing Union flag beside her, in ex., gaudens britannia mdcccxiv, 35mm, 29.06g (Diakov 383.1; BHM 845), virtually as struck with prooflike surfaces, excessively rare in gold Discussing this medal in BHM, Laurence Browne mentions an anecdote preserved by Richard Sainthill in his Olla Podrida, or, Scraps, Numismatic, Antiquarian, and Literary (London, 1844). According to Sainthill, ‘The Grand Duchess of Oldenburg being expected to visit the Mint, Mr Wyon, at very short notice, engraved a medal of her brother, the Emperor Alexander, and complimentary of her visit to England…When she came to the Press or Coining-room no mention of the medal was made; but a gold blank being put in and stamped, was handed to her by Lord Bathurst from the die; she immediately recognised the likeness to her brother, and, when Mr Wyon was presented to her, expressed her satisfaction with his medal in the most flattering terms, and the next day sent him a diamond ring, as a further testimony of her approbation.’ Ex World-Wide Coins of California auction XIII, 5 May 1988, lot 567.

A large Dutch Delft blue and white dish, 19th century, painted with flowers inside a scalloped rim, 38cm diameter, also an Italian faience bust of a young woman, 18cm high, a Russian blue glazed earthenware bowl, Kutshetsoff Factory, moulded with St Michael and the dragon, 22cm diameter, a Paris porcelain bowl painted with flowers and swags, 28cm wide, a continental creamware oval pierced basket, and a white glazed pottery jar and cover, 19cm high (7).

Joseph Robinson Kirk (1820-1894) RHA. A white marble bust of a gentleman, possibly the late O'Bryen Bellingham Esq., MD inscribed verso 'J R Kirk Sculpscit in Marmore 1857', height 26.5in.O'Bryen Bellingham (1803-1857), a distinguished Dublin surgeon of the day, published a treatise on the diseases of the heart. Kirk's posthumous bust of Bellingham was shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, 1859.
