JOSEPH TOWNE (1806-1879), A CARVED MARBLE PORTRAIT BUST OF A YOUNG BOY inscribed to reverse 'J TOWNE Sculp, Guy's Hospital, 1838.Approximate measurement: Height: 60cm, Width: 35cmBorn in Royston, Herts. Joseph Towne was a sculptor and moulageur best known for making anatomical wax models. In 1825 Towne was taken onto the staff at Guy's Hospital making over a thousand wax moulages of diseases in various stages, including smallpox, for Guy's and hospitals around the world. Towne also sculpted marble busts and his work includes an equestrian statue of the Duke of Kent for Buckingham Palace.
