UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Silver crown, 1847. Royal Mint. Plain edge proof, 999 fine silver issue. N over inverted N in UNITA. The so called 'Gothic' crown was never intended for circulation and sold to the public only through official agents, at the time being Hunt and Roskell. It was an immediate success and has always been in high demand, generally held as one of the most beautiful designs British coinage has to offer.Since Royal Mint released the restrike in their Great Engravers Series in 2021, prices of the original Gothic Crowns have soared. The heightened interest has also led to more research being done on the different varieties, of which there are many! Some mystique remains around the plain edge varieties which have differing silver content: 0.999 vs 0.925 fine. We have been told these will be separated out in a future Spink catalogue. PCGS have only given the CAMEO designation to 1 other 999 fine gothic crown.
