LiteratureA. Salomon & G. Cogeval, Vuillard, The Inexhaustible Glance. Critical Catalogue of the Paintings and Pastels, Vol. III, Milan, 2001, no. XI-176 (illustrated p. 1383).La Salle du Moyen Âge dans le Musée des Arts Décoratifs (première étude) forms part of a series of museum studies that Vuillard made in the years following World War I. In this atmospheric composition the main figure, clad with a purple overcoat and high toque, looks away from the spectator to observe the stained-glass windows, his profile neatly mirroring that of the bust behind him. Vuillard creates an intimate scene, whereby he invites the viewer to be another visitor at the museum. During the war Vuillard had been mobilised in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine near Paris. One of his comrades commissioned him to decorate the apartment of his sister Madame Bauer-Judin in Binningen, Switzerland. Vuillard painted four large panels and two overdoors for this commission, which resulted in a decorative ensemble of his studies of Paris galleries, and is regarded as an important work from the artist's later oeuvre. In preparation for the final compositions, Vuillard created over a hundred sketches and pastels of museum interiors from the newly reopened Louvre, the chapel of the Palace of Versailles and the Museum of Decorative Arts. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Prince Charles & Benedict MedalOf Jacobite Interest: A Jacobite silver medallion Charles Edward Stuart and Henry Benedict, Duke of York. The Legitimacy of the Jacobite Succession. The obverse with a bust of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the motto Mercat Inter Omnes and on the reverse, a bust of Henry Benedict, and the motto 'Alter Ab. Illo'.Footnotes:The fourth and final Jacobite heir to publicly claim the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland, Henry Benedict Stuart was the younger son of the Old Pretender, James 'III and VIII,' and brother of the Young Pretender, Charles 'III.' Created the Duke of York by his father, he remained removed from the politics of the Jacobite movement, and was made Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati in Italy where he spent his life in exile. Upon his elder brother's death in 1788, those within his camp as well as the movement styled him as Henry IX of England and Ireland and Henry I of Scotland. He never referred to himself publicly in this manner, however, and the papacy did not recognize him as the legitimate heir to the respective thrones. Dying childless in 1807, the Jacobite line of succession then passed to Henry's nearest blood relative (the great-great-great-grandson of Charles I), Charles Emmanuel IV of Sardinia. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A white marble bust of a gentleman, by repute depicting Sir John Turing, 1st Bart of Foveran, (c1595-1662)Carved wearing a judicial wig, jabot and gown, raised on a turned socle, 54cm wide, 24cm deep, 68cm high (21in wide, 9in deep, 26 1/2in high) Footnotes:By repute, this bust (traditionally identified as depicting Sir John Turing, 1st Bart of Foveran , c1595-1662) stood for many years by the village well which gave the Parish its name. Foveran translates as Fobharan in Scottish Gaelic and Fobhar is the anglicised version of the Irish name that signifies 'the town of the water-springs'. According to the vendors (Foveran Church of Scotland) it then stood in the hall of Foveran House and was subsequently bought by Sir John Leslie Turing, 11th Baronet (1895-1987) from the executors of the McKenzie family and gifted to the church in 1979.The church has been in recent contact with the current Baronet and from a portrait believed to depict the 1st Baronet still in the family the bust bears no resemblance to the portrait which shows the 1st Baronet sporting a beard. Therefore, the traditional attribution is likely to be spurious. However, if the Turing connection is to be believed it is likely to depict the 4th or 5th Baronet. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
