Gandhara, modern day northwest Pakistan, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. This is a stucco fragment of a head in the Gandharan style, showing both Asian and Hellenistic influences in the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth -- although the face looks like contemporary statues of the Buddha, the smooth, straight hair indicates that this bust is of another individual (the Buddha is always shown with tightly curled hair). Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.75" W x 3.5" H (7 cm x 8.9 cm). Provenance: Ex-private M. Reniger collection, Chicago, IL. Condition: This piece is a fragment of a head with the facial details intact. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. This is a fun collection of four varied items from Byzantine Christian worship -- there is a small pendant with a walking saint, a transparent red stone carved saint's bust, a large pin with a cross and Christ's head as top decoration, and a cross and small icon connected by a bronze chain. These objects were made at a time when tremendous effort and innovation went into producing art with Christian themes. Size of largest: 13.2" L x 1.2" W (33.5 cm x 3 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: All have patina/wear (except for the small stone one). One is a fragment.
