* Owen (Richard, 1804-1892). English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist. A plaster relief sculpture by an unidentified artist, 1891, head and shoulders in full profile and wearing a cap within a carved decorative border comprising four birds including two cockatoos, the date 'June 1891' in relief at head and 'Sir Richard Owen, Professor of Natural History' in relief at foot of design, 25 x 19 cm, deep-set plush-lined green velvet mount in wooden frame, glazed, overall 37 x 29 x 6 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Richard Owen is now best remembered for coining the word dinosaur. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London, and was an outspoken critic of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. This plaster relief sculpture appears to have been made very near the end of Owen's life, (he died on 18 December 1892), when Owen was largely confined to his bed in Richmond, London. The significance of the date and identity of the artist has not been established. The National Portrait Gallery, London, have a list of all known portraits, most of these being oils, drawings and photographs. There is one plaster bust noted by W.H. Thornycroft from 1880 and the only portrait known from this very late period in his life is a mezzotint engraving by H.T.J. Thaddeus from 1859 and for which the artist obtained signed proofs from Owen at his home in 1891. The 'Birds Gallery' in the Natural History Museum, London, was originally designed in 1881 and between 1887 and 1891 the Museum installed a series of cases on evolutionary theory. Perhaps this was an intended design for inclusion there.

Lot 241

British School, mid-19th century- Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, wearing a black coat and white shirt; oil on canvas, 53.3 x 43.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

Lot 213

Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS, British 1769-1830- Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, wearing a black coat and white stock, traditionally identified as Herbert Byfield; oil on canvas, bears an old inscribed label on the lower horizontal stretcher bar, 75.8 x 63.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The inscribed label raises the possibility that the sitter is another member of the Byfield family, George Byfield (c.1756-1813), who was architect and designer of Canterbury Prison and Hurlingham House.

Lot 228

Giuseppe de Nittis, Italian 1846-1884- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a star brooch; oil on canvas, signed 'De Nittis' (lower right), 51 x 39.7 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Giuseppe de Nittis is often hailed as one of the most significant Impressionist painters from Italy. Early in his career, he was associated with Telemaco Signorini (1835-1901) and the Macchiaioli, a group which, like the French Impressionists, rejected traditional Academic principles which placed history painting above landscape painting and portraiture, instead promoting an approach which embraced a greater realism informed by the practice of painting 'en plein air'. Indeed, de Nittis was a consummate portraitist who worked both in oils and pastels, with his sitters among some of the most important figures in 19th-century French culture, including Émile Zola (1840-1902), Édouard Manet (1832-1883) and Louis Duranty (1833-1880). The features of the sitter in the present work are very close to those of his wife Léontine, as can be seen, for example, in his 1882 pastel portrait entitled 'Winter Day, or Portrait of Madame de Nittis' held at the Pinacoteca Giuseppe de Nittis in Barletta, Italy. We are grateful to Professor Fausto Minervini for confirming the attribution of the present lot based on photographs, and for suggesting a date to between 1867 and 1870.

Lot 38

Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS, British 1769-1830- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a feathered hat and pearl necklace; oil on canvas, 65 x 57 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK (by descent).

Lot 4

Manner of Joos van Cleve, Netherlandish, early 19th century- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a white headdress; oil on panel, 25.6 x 20.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

Lot 252

British School, mid 19th century- Portrait of a lady in profile, bust-length, wearing a bonnet; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'P.C. Stortz / 1855' (lower right), 17 x 12.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

Lot 229

Édouard Cabane, French 1857-1942- Portrait of a girl, bust-length, wearing a blue dress, with flowers in her hair; oil on canvas, signed 'EDOUARD CABANE' (upper right), 46.2 x 38.3 cm. Note: Cabane studied under Adolphe William Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1838-1912). He regularly exhibited his work at the Société des Artistes Français until 1932. He was awarded with a distinction at the Salon in 1886 and at the Universal Exhibition in 1889. The loose brushwork of this charming painting creates a dreamy, slightly hazy quality, which is typical of the artist's approach and which is evident in much of his work. He often depicted young figures holding flowers or toys, or adorned with bows, thereby imparting his portraits with an endearing sense of innocence.

Lot 175

James Gillray, British 1756-1815- Germans Eating Sour-Kraut; hand-coloured etching, signed 'Js Gillray inv & fect' (within the plate), published 7 May 1803 by H. Humphrey, St. James's Street, 26.8 x 37.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: See British Museum no.1868,0808.7114. Five Germans seated at a round table, eating cabbage and sausages. One of these has tucked the table-cloth round his neck. A lean military officer sits in back view plying spoon and fork with elbows raised; a lean dog laps from his plate, one paw on his knee the other on the table. Cocked hat and sword are on the ground beside him. A thin and elderly man of more polished appearance puts down his head to the mound of greenery on his plate, which he shovels up with spoon and fork; his knife lies on the table-cloth. His hat and gold-headed cane are under his stool. A fat cook enters carrying a large steaming dish piled high with sauerkraut and sausages. On the table are a 'Vinegar' bottle and fragments from over-full plates. On the wall are a map of 'The Mouths of the Rhine', showing the 'German Ocean'; an oval bust portrait of 'Arch-Duke Charles' with a gross profile resembling that given by Gillray to the Duke of Clarence; and a picture of a row of pigs whose heads emerge from sties to feed in a trough. On the floor are large tankards, a broken pipe, a pile of used plates which a cat is licking, and a 'Bill of Fare - 1st Course Sour Krout - 2d Course Sour Krout - 3d Course Sour Krout - Desert Sour Krout.' Tankards and plates are inscribed 'Weyler Castle Street'.

Lot 35

Circle of Joseph Wright of Derby, ARA, British 1734-1797- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a pink dress and holding a book; oil on canvas, bears inscribed label ‘The Marquess de Amodio / British Embassy, Paris / (stamped on stretcher) / -19th c-’ on the stretcher, 61.1 x 50.4 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 9 September 2004, lot 48 (£1,195). Private Collection, UK. Note: Wright of Derby studied under the portraitist Thomas Hudson (1701-1779). He established himself as a portrait painter in both Derby and Liverpool, where he took on commissions for prominent contemporaries, after having worked with Hudson in London for fifteen months. The present work can be compared on both stylistic and compositional grounds to many of his fine portraits of women.

Lot 112

Andreas van Rymsdyk, Dutch 1754-1786- Four portraits of sitters, bust-length; each pencil and watercolour on paper, oval, each signed and dated 'Drawn by / Andrew Rymsdyk / 1783' on the backing boards, each bears old inscribed label attached to the backing boards, each 14.2 x 11 cm., four (4). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The inscriptions suggest that the sitters are all members of the same family, perhaps 'Ambry', and includes Rev. John William, Col. George William, another John William (dressed in military attire), and Mary. Despite their small scale, these portraits are full of character, providing an evocative glimpse into 18th-century British society.

Lot 231

Circle of Sir John Lavery, RA RSA RHA, Irish 1856-1941- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a grey jacket; oil on canvas, bears signature 'Lavery' (lower right), 54.4 x 44.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, France. Note: The present work, charming in its subject and high quality in finish, is highly reminiscent not only of the portraits of Sir John Lavery, but also of those by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), John da Costa (1867-1931) and Philip de László (1869-1937).

Lot 247

A Salomé, French, fl.1850s- Portrait of a man, bust-length, wearing a white collar and black cravat; pastel on paper, oval, signed and dated 'A Salomé 1855' (lower left), 54.2 x 44.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

Lot 207

Sir William Charles Ross, RA, British 1794-1860- Portrait of a young lady, bust-length; pencil on paper, bears old inscription on the reverse of the backing board 'by Ross Sir William. Chas. R.A. / (1809-1859)', 24.4 x 19.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Ross worked principally as a portrait painter and miniaturist, with prominent sitters including Queen Victoria (1819-1901), her mother the Duchess of Kent (1786-1861), Prince Albert (1819-1861), and a number of other members of the royal family. The present work exhibits Ross's skill as a portraitist, capturing the character of his young sitter, who looks directly out to the viewer with disarming candour.

Lot 68

Follower of Jean-Antoine Watteau, French 1684-1721- Study of a young woman, bust-length; red and black chalk on paper, 20.5 x 21 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 12 June 2007, lot 6. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work bears the greatest similarities perhaps to Watteau's chalk drawings 'Study of a Woman's Head and Hands' held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York [2012.150.1]; his 'Two Figure Studies of a Young Woman' in the Albertina, Vienna [no.89]; and to the upper right figure in his sheet of studies at the British Museum, London [1895,0915.941]. Although he parted with few in his lifetime, Watteau's chalk drawings became well-known after his death thanks to his friend Jean de Jullienne's (1686-1766) project of publishing etchings after his drawings under the title 'Figures de différents caractères' (1726-28).

Lot 8

Manner of Petrus Christus, 18th century and later- Portrait of a man, possibly an alchemist, bust-length, wearing a sugarloaf hat and holding a test tube at a table; oil on panel, cradled, 54.8 x 39.4 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, France. Note: This enigmatic portrait remains somewhat of a mystery, though recalls very much the portraits of early Netherlandish painters Petrus Christus (fl.1544-d.1475/6) and Hans Memling (fl.1465-d.1494). The sugar loaf hat is a kind of early top hat ending in a slightly rounded conical top. This very tall, tapering hat was first worn in medieval times and its name derives from the loaves into which sugar was formed at that time. The enigmatic crest in the upper left corner has as yet evaded identification, though the inclusion of a ram in heraldry has traditionally signified leadership, authority, strength and perseverance.

Ansell discovered a way to refine this batch without annealing and added the second hairband to Victoria's bust for easy identification, yet disguised enough to enter circulation. Ansell's coins were found to be much tougher than other sovereigns and he was awarded an official Thank You note by the Royal Mint along with £100 for his efforts. These Ansell sovereigns are some of the most sought after varieties due to the unusual story behind them.Second young head of Victoria facing left; hair held in place by two ribbons, lower ribbon with an additional line that signifies the Ansell variety; date below truncation of bust; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.In secure plastic holder, graded NGC XF 45, certification number 6769668-006.
