Spanish or Italian school; 17th century."Magdalena divesting herself of her riches".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.It presents repainting.Measurements: 91 x 73 cm.In the interior of a house of certain social position, as it can be deduced only by the detail of the cloth of the background, the dress of the girl, and the cloth that is placed on the table situated in the right zone, a young woman is situated, uncovering her bust and raising her look upwards adopting a doubtful attitude. The long-haired, golden-haired young woman stands out with her golden hair, which is arranged over her men. As she directs her hands to her chest in an attitude of clemency, she rests one of her elbows on the table, where different ornaments can be seen, as well as very rich jewels, all of them despised, placed untidily on the table, but already stripped from her body. Thus showing a disinterest in the material in favour of the celestial, to which the young woman turns. The disregard of material things in order to choose the way of God was a common element in the lives of many saints such as St. Rosalia, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Elizabeth of Hungary and Mary Magdalene herself.Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the New Testament as a distinguished disciple of Christ. According to the Gospels, she housed and provided materially for Jesus and his disciples during their stay in Galilee, and was present at the Crucifixion. She was a witness to the Resurrection, as well as the one in charge of transmitting the news to the apostles. She is also identified with the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfumes before his arrival in Jerusalem, which is why her main iconographic attribute is a knob of essences. Alone, Mary Magdalene is often depicted in a variable of the one presented here, doing penance in the desert, repentant for her past sins. The story of this saint serves as an example of Christ's forgiveness, and conveys the message of the possibility of redemption of the soul through repentance and faith.
SHAKESPEARE INTEREST. A CHIP CARVED WOOD SPECTACLE CASE LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY possibly mulberry from the tree at New Place, Stratford, the lid with the bust of Sir William Shakespeare and two crests on a foliate lattice ground 13.3cm wide Catalogue Note During the 18th century, there was an informal tourist industry in Stratford with people visiting Shakespeare's tomb and the mulberry tree he supposedly planted at New Place. However, the then owner, Rev. Francis Gastrell, became annoyed by the growing number of visitors and sometime in the 1750's felled the tree and later demolished New Place. Objects carved from the mulberry tree first started to appear around 1760 / 1770, after Gastrell sold the wood to local carvers and turners, for example: Thomas Sharp and George Cooper, eager to make souvenirs. At this period of 'bardolatry' drinking vessels, tea caddies, tobacco stoppers, goblets, small boxes or caskets, and similar objects carved from the wood were highly prized.
