Attributed to Jean Warin (Flemish 1607-1672) - a bronze medal commemorating the appointment of Antoine Ruzé as French Superintendent of Finance in 1629, the obverse depicting a bust of Ruzé facing right, wearing a lace collar and ribbon with the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit, his armour decorated with a lion's head to the shoulder, the reverse depicting Atlas placing the burden of the world on to Hercules' back, Hercules' lion pelt and club on the ground to the right, dia.6.5cm.Antoine (Coëffier) Ruzé (1581-1632) adopted his uncle Martin Ruzé's, the Superintendent of Mines, name to gain access to the French court. Under Richelieu's guidance, he became marquis of Longjumeau and Effiet, and negotiated the marriage of Charles I of England to Louis XIII's sister Henrietta Maria in the role of Ambassador in London. He further rose to the roles of Superintendent of Finances and Marshal of France.Condition report: Complete.Some surface marks.Otherwise good with modest wear only.

Carel Frans Philippeau (1825-1897) Dutch Visiting the shrine - a figure group in repose before a Mediterranean landscape Signed, oil on panel, together with a companion, 34cm by 45.5cm (2) Provenance: W H Patterson Fine Art, London See illustration . The example with the classical bust - Cleaned and re-varnished with a high gloss finish. Small area of delicate and sporadic in-filling within the skirt of the lady holding the small child. and possibly the lower edge of the skirt belonging to the lady seated and turned away from the viewer. Example with the shrine - Cleaned and re-varnished to the same finish. Small amount of delicate re-touching to flaked paint in and around the shoulder, arm and waist area of the central seated lady and a further delicate amount of in-filling around the standing child's back, the seated gentleman's elbow and the area below this. Each essentially in overall very good condition.

It fell from fashion in the 18th century but was rediscovered by Blake and the romantic writers of the 19th century, and so a bust of Dante placed in a library was a sign of a gentleman's education.. Crack to each of the tassels on his cap. Some chips around the lower rim of the base. Some surface scuffs and abrasions.

~ A Gilt Metal William Pitt Memorial Medal, circa 1806, set with a pâte de verre cameo bust of Pitt within a motto NON SIBI SED PATRIAE VIXIT below a laurel wreath, the reverse with enamel panel inscribed PITT CLUB on a textured ground, further inscribed SIR JOHN HEATHCOTE within a blue enamel rim inscribed in gilt In Memory of the Rt Honourable Wm Pitt Died 23 January 1806 aged 47, 5cm, with suspension loop and blue ribbon, in red morocco case; and A Similar Gilt Metal Pitt Club Medal, inscribed SIR I E HEATHCOTE KNT (lacking cameo and enamel) (2) See illustration The original London Pitt Club was founded in 1793 by Nathaniel Atcheson of the Middle Temple to counteract the principles disseminated by the partisans of the French Revolution. Its meetings were held on the birthdays of the King and Queen, but after Mr Pitt's retirement from office and the celebrated meeting of 1802 at which upwards of 900 people attended the Hall of the Merchant Taylors, the members of this association met on the anniversaries of Mr Pitt's birthday until 1808 when it was thought a more extensive society might be formed to perpetuate the principles of this illustrious statesman. The first dinner held in 1808 cost £841-8-6. Subsequently, approximately 45 country clubs were established and many of these issued badges in bronze, silver gilt and silver, as well as in pewter. Rule 10 of the London club reads That each member shall wear at all meetings of the Club the Pitt medal, tied on his left breast with a garter blue ribbon and that the larger medal with the wider ribbon be worn by the chairman of the day.. As per description the 2nd medal lacking the cameo, this medal also has some wear and minor dents.
