Weight: 1.40g. Diameter: 20mm. Grade: F - flan a little uneven with a strong portrait, fine details, reasonable legend, centre of the reverse scuffed, some environmental damage. Eadgar (c944-975), also called Edgar, was the son of King Edmund I and the younger brother of King Eadwig. He succeeded the latter as King of the English in 959. Eadgar introduced a new coinage and, from his reign, a royal portrait became a standard feature of English currency.

The portrait is surrounded by a beaded circle and a legend that reads 'IACOBVS · D · G: MAG: BRI · FR: ET HI · REX' proceeded by a trefoil mintmark. Reverse: crowned, square-topped shield of royal arms quartered by a long cross with heart-shaped terminals. The trace of a linear inner circle is present. The legend reads 'HENRIC ROSAS REGINA IACOB.' followed by a backwards 'C'. Weight: 2.26g. Diameter: 21.1mm. Grade: VF - minor edge damage, otherwise Very Fine.Laurels, Half Laurels and Quarter Laurels were English gold coins, struck only in the last six years of James I's reign and valued at 20 Shillings. These short-lived denominations were named for the laurel wreath worn by the King in the obverse portrait, of which five variants are listed in Spink. When James' died in 1625, he was succeeded by his son Charles, who revived the Unite, which had been used earlier in his father's reign.

This coin was struck in the year that the Acts of Union came into effect, combining the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland and creating the Kingdom of Great Britain. Since 1603, England and Scotland had been ruled by the same monarch, but their parliaments had remained separate. The Union of the two states prompted a recoinage of Scottish silver currency to align with contemporary English money. From 1707 through to 1709, silver coins were struck at the Edinburgh Mint with an 'E' mintmark below the bust of Queen Anne to indicate their origin. On these Edinburgh issues and coins struck at the mint in London, two of the shields on the reverse show the conjoined arms of England and Scotland. Previous issues, struck pre-union, separate the English lions from the Scottish unicorn.

1849 Queen Victoria silver 'Godless' type A Florin or Two Shillings graded MS 65 by NGC (S 3890). Obverse: left-facing crowned bust of Victoria by William Wyon with richly detailed robes, 'VICTORIA REGINA 1849' around. Reverse: crowned cruciform shields of royal arms with national flower emblems in the angles by William Wyon with '+ + ONE FLORIN' above and 'ONE TENTH OF A POUND' below. Edge: milled. Mintage: 413,800. Grade: MS 65. Offered sealed in an NGC holder (#2915842-016). These coins are known as 'Godless' Florins because the letters 'D. G.', standing for 'Dei Gratia' or 'by the Grace of God', were not included in the obverse legend. This was controversial at the time, and the design was quickly modified for issues dated 1851 onwards.

Obverse: older laureate bust of King George II, facing left, wearing armour with the face of a lion on his shoulder, 'LIMA' below. Legend: 'GEORGIUS · II · DEI · GRATIA ·'. Reverse: crowned cruciform shields with the garter star in the centre, plain angles. Legend: 'M · B · F · ET H · REX · F · D · ET · L · D · S · R · I · AT · ET · E · 1746'. Edge: raised lettering that reads 'DECVS · ET · TVTAMEN · ANNO · REGNI · DECIMO · NONO'. Weight: 14.92g. Diameter: 33.7mm. Grade: GF - grainy under magnification, otherwise Good Fine. Some British coins minted in 1745 and 1746 feature a privy mark in the form of the word 'LIMA' below the bust. This includes Five Guinea, 'full' Guineas, Half Guineas, Crowns, Halfcrowns, Shillings and Sixpences. These King George II coins were struck using gold and silver captured from European treasure ships on the way back from Peru, hence the use of 'LIMA', the Peruvian capital. The capture is often attributed to Admiral George Anson, later 1st Baron Anson, with the ships said to be Spanish galleons. However, archival research reveals that the captured ships were French (the Louis Erasmus and the Marquis d'Antin). These vessels were taken by British privateers, government-sanctioned pirates whose prize money was shared between sponsors and crew.The Gentlemen's Magazine reported in September 1745 that the 'privateers waited on the King and offered £700,000 - their share of the prizes - to be immediately employ'd for his majesty's service, which was accepted and the money is to be repaid by Parliament.'. The loot, consisting of Spanish coin and bullion, was then transported to the Royal Mint. The application to place the word 'LIMA' under the royal portrait was made by the Bank of England in December 1745.
