Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 180 to 220 CE. A lovely small alabaster bust of a bearded man with thick, curly hair on his head and face. His face is naturalistic and has a rounded nose and large, sensitive eyes. In the Classical World, small busts were often made as copies of larger statues, usually ones displayed in public spaces, to be placed in the household. This bust probably depicts someone of high status. The facial hair helps us date it; Roman emperors were clean shaven until the Emperior Hadrian, who grew one, according to Plutarch, to hide scars on his face, although he may also have been inspired by Greek style. This fashion was mirrored by other men for just a brief period in Roman history. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.9" L x 1.8" W x 4.75" H (4.8 cm x 4.6 cm x 12.1 cm) Provenance: ex-Private LA County collection Condition: Repaired in two places, and with a hole drilled into the top of the head. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #117804
Ancient Greece, ca. 4th century BCE. A hollow, mold-made terracotta bust of a woman, probably a goddess, with substantive white pigment remaining. She has a wonderfully life-like face, with a long, thin nose, deep-set eyes, and a small mouth. Her hair is in the classical Greek style, in uniform curls around her face. Votive pottery figures like this one were sold outside of temples to worshipers who would give them as offerings. Size: 3.35" W x 5.65" H (8.5 cm x 14.4 cm) Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005 Condition: Repaired from several pieces, with restoration around base. #120331
