R.A.F.); Imperial Service Medal, G.V.R., circular type, 2nd ‘crowned bust’ issue (Thomas Hugh Davies.) in case of issue; Jubilee 1935, unnamed as issued, nearly extremely fine (4) £80-£120 --- Thomas Hugh Davies was born in the parish of St. Luke’s, Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1877 and was a Telegraphist with the General Post Office by civilian occupation. During the Great War, he enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 2 May 1916 and served an Air Mechanic 2nd Class, being promoted to 1st Class on 1 October 1917 and transferring in that rank to the Royal Air Force on its formation on 1 April 1918. He was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve on 21 October 1919 and was discharged on 30 April 1920. Sold with the following items and ephemera: a metal plate (90mm x 25mm) broken into two pieces, impressed ‘Albatros Gesellschaft fur flugzeugunternehmungen m.b.H. Berlin-Johnannisthal Type “DVa” No. “4416”’; the recipient’s riband bar; five packets of postcards depicting views of Bombay, Port Said, H.M.S. Ganges, India and Cornwall respectively and a quantity of loose postcards mostly relating to Courseilles-sur-Mer and Malta. A miniature booklet of photographs depicting scenes of Gibraltar; a set of ten small photographs of Aden circa 1945; a packet of 12 photographs featuring views of Bournmouth; 8 small photographs depicting of sights of Bangkok; three Arras, France bus/train tickets; Bombay guide booklet; H.M.S. Although the East and Central Africa medal was normally issued with one or more clasps, at least three British recipients are confirmed as receiving no clasp medals. Alfred William Stong was born in Dublin, and attested for the Corps of Armourers in January 1891, after serving an apprenticeship in London as a Gunsmith. He served for several years in India before he was posted for service with the Uganda Rifles, taking part in operations in Uganda and Somaliland in 1898-99 (Medal). He was briefly posted for duty with the 2nd Dragoon Guards in July 1900 before being posted for duty with the Ashanti Field Force two months later, for a period of four months during the operations of the Ashanti Expedition in West Africa (Medal). He next spent a year in Hong Kong followed by another five years in India, before returning home in December 1907. In 1909 he received his L.S. & G.C. medal, and in January 1912 he was discharged having completed 21 years service. On the outbreak of war in 1914, he rejoined on the 14th September and served in France from March 1915 to January 1916, with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force for two months, and in France again from February 1916 to March 1919. He was finally discharged on 4 April 1919. Sold with full service details and copied discharge papers.

Louis Parfait Merlieux (1796-1855). Marble bust of a gentleman, dated 1829, restoration to nose, etc., 67cm high, 36cm wide. Louis Parfait Merlieux trained at Ecloe des Beaux Arts, Paris, he joined the museum de l'Histoire Naturale Paris in 1820, where he worked under Baron Cuvier. He exhibited at the Salon between 1824 and 1837. He is best known for his work on the fountains in the Place de la Concorde, Paris.
Collection of Parianware, including busts, figures and a Prince Consort commemorative jugCondition report: Angel holding shell- shell is cracked and re-glued. Standing man- head been off and re-glued, hairline crack to base. Female bust (with main lot number sticker) is missing a rose of her shoulder and some petals on her head are chipped/missing. Wall pocket- some chips to blue petals. Standing lady- some nibbles/chips to frill of her shawl. Other busts appear to be in good condition.

c. 2000-1000 BC, Amlash culture. An openwork bronze fertility pendant comprising a female bust with a child. She is depicted in the round, with long, flowing hair, and wearing a flowing, belted gown; the swaddled child is cradled in her arms. The Amlash culture refers to an assortment of historic materials and periods in Northern Iran, enduring for many centuries. This item attests to the importance of fertility and motherhood in Amlash culture societies. Good condition; beautiful patina; wearable. The setting bears an engraved male bust with short, curled hair, elegant facial features; he wears a toga, suggesting that he is a senator. This portrait may represent the one-time owner of this elegant piece. C. 100-300 AD. Roman. Gold ring comprising circular hoop and round bezel with a carnelian setting. The setting bears an engraved double bust of Janus, with both faces sporting thick curling hair, full beards and fierce facial expressions. In the Roman pantheon, Janus was the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways passages, frames, and endings. His two faces symbolise his ability to look both to the future and to the past. In order to confirm its authenticity, this piece has undergone X-Ray Fluorescence analysis by an independent Belgian Laboratory. The samples collected show the chemical composition to reflect the typical metal contents of the described period, whilst also showing no modern trace elements in the patina. Excellent condition. Ca.200-100 BC. A hollow-formed terracotta bust of a goddess wearing a high-girdled chiton and a radiate headdress; aperture to the reverse. In the Hellenistic period, votive figures were given in fulfilment of vows to the gods, but this piece would now make an excellent centrepiece to any modern collection. (19th century) Portrait of Joseph Carus White and his wife Maria Harriet White nee Carus playing a game of chess Extensively inscribed and dated 1872 verso, oil on canvas, 87cm diameter (oval) See illustration See Illustration . Stretcher shadow especially prominent along top edge. Rectangular upright patch repair to reverse upper left hand corner approx 1 cm by 15 cm (images can be supplied upon request). Small nick to surface slightly above and left of ladies head no more than 0.5 cm across. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Varying sized stable craquelure throughout. Small patch of more pronounced crazing amongst table support. There is an amount of fairly consistent retouching throughout the ladies skirt, a further patch/patches at her right shoulder, a minimal amount above her left hand at bust height and a further reasonably small amount of retouching within her hair. The gentleman has two small patches of retouching within his hair approx centre and right. Some of the shadowing and lines of the interior on the right hand side appear to have been strengthened. Upon inspection out of frame (please see images) general rubbing to edges as expected. The work has seemingly been relined or strengthened/laid down onto a new canvas in line with the stretcher. Louis-François Aubry (1767-1851): Miniature Bust Portrait of Jean Bon Saint-André, wearing a black hat with tricolour scarf and feather, black jacket and red waistcoat, signed Aubry - An 2, oval, on ivory, 6.5cm by 5cm Jean Bon Saint-André served in the National Convention during the early years of the French Revolution and became a Member of the Committee of Public Safety in 1793. He also suggested that the Tricolour replaced the Golden Fleur de Lys as the French flag.. Not examined out of frame. Portrait appears in good condition. Several deep scratches to the glass.

The current bust is based on the memorial in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. Restoration to nose and chin. Some minor overpainting to front of base and side of neck.
