FRANCE, Marquis de Lafayette, 1830, a bronze-gilt medal by F. Caunois, uniformed bust right, rev. inscription in seven lines, 52mm (Olivier 51). Nearly extremely fine £50-£70 --- Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), was called upon by the citizens of France to command the National Guard in July 1830.
Charles II, Landing at Dover, 1660, a contemporary (?) copy in white metal of the medal by J. Roettiers, bust right with long hair within ornate laurel branches, rev. warriors representing England, Scotland and Ireland with sceptre, sword and three crowns, greet the King approaching in a ship, in the distance Dover Castle with the eye of Providence above, 57mm (cf. MI I, 457/48; cf. E 211). About very fine £80-£100
FRANCE, La France á Verdun - ‘Le Poilu’, c. 1917, a light bronze plaquette by G.-H. Prud’homme, naked soldier standing facing, head left, holding sword and billowing standard; cannon and gnarled landscape in background, rev. helmeted bust of Marianne left in medallion, laurel branch and ornate tablet below, named (J. Begley July 4, 1922), 66 x 47mm (CGMP III, 323. cf. BDW 13/200). Extremely fine with tan patina; in case of issue £80-£100 --- The Battle of Verdun lasted for most of 1916 and resulted in an important victory for France but at the cost of almost three-quarters of a million lives lost on both sides. The name le poilu (meaning hairy) was a slang term for French infantrymen in the war, on account of their rarely having the chance to shave while in the trenches.

Local, HAMPSHIRE, Winchester College, King’s Medal, 1902, a matt silver award by G.W. de Saulles, bust of Edward VII left, rev. tomb of William of Wykeham, edge named (James Steuart Wilson 1908), 49mm, 51.10g (BHM 3720). Extremely fine or better, scarce £100-£120 --- Sir James Steuart Wilson (21 July 1889 – 18 December 1966) was an English singer, known for tenor roles in oratorios and concerts in the first half of the 20th century. After the Second World War he was an administrator for several organisations including the Arts Council of Great Britain, the BBC and the Royal Opera House.

Nearly extremely fine, sometime cleaned, rare £80-£100 --- Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1881, Marion Phillips arrived in the UK in 1904, After doing post-graduate work at the London School of Economics, she worked on the Royal Commission into the Poor Laws, researching public health, medical relief and the treatment of destitute children. An advocate of women’s suffrage, she became the first female MP to represent the seat of Sunderland at the 1929 General election.

This lot includes another James Watts bronze medallion, the obverse features a bust of James Watt by W.Wyon, the reverse engraved within a wreath 'Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society Instituted 1833, 1st class', awarded to Mr James Bell for original sketches in watercolours October 1851 43mm.
